It’s a tough market out there for goaltenders, and Alexandar Georgiev is finding that out the hard way. Over a month into free agency, the former Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks netminder is still without a contract, a situation that has a lot of people in the hockey world talking. After a rough season in San Jose, where he posted a 3.88 goals-against average, it’s easy to see why some teams might be hesitant.
But let’s not forget, this is a guy who has shown he can be a legitimate #1 goalie in this league. Sometimes a change of scenery is all a player needs, and I believe Georgiev is primed for a major bounce-back season. The big question is, where will that be?
Two Canadian Teams in the Mix for Georgiev
As we get deeper into the offseason, a couple of teams have emerged as potential landing spots for Georgiev: the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. From what I’m hearing, both teams are looking for a solid #3 goalie to add some depth and insurance. Think about it – a guy like Georgiev, who has plenty of NHL experience, would be an ideal security blanket in case of injuries.
We all saw what happened with the Toronto Maple Leafs a couple of seasons ago when they had to rely on Martin Jones. Having a capable third-stringer can be the difference between making the playoffs and an early offseason. For Georgiev, it’s not the starting gig he probably wants, but it’s a foot in the door with a competitive team.
The KHL Looms as a Real Possibility
Of course, there’s always the KHL. There’s no doubt that Georgiev would have suitors in Russia, and at this point, it might be his best option to start the season. He could sign a contract with a release clause that allows him to return to the NHL if a team comes calling. It’s a risky move, but it would keep him playing at a high level.
My gut tells me Georgiev wants to stay in the NHL, but the clock is ticking. Don’t be surprised if he ends up in the KHL for the first part of the season, with an eye on a mid-season return to North America. Keep a close watch on this situation, because wherever he lands, Alexandar Georgiev is a name you’ll be hearing a lot about this season.
