Let’s cut to the chase: the Sidney Crosby trade rumors are officially on ice, at least for now. For all the chatter about a potential move to the Montreal Canadiens or the Colorado Avalanche, the reality is that No. 87 isn’t going anywhere this offseason.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed as much on his “32 Thoughts” podcast, stating unequivocally that Crosby will be in a Penguins uniform to start the season.
Why Sidney Crosby Isn’t a Typical Trade Candidate
From my perspective as an expert in NHL rumors, this has always been the most likely outcome. The idea of Crosby in another jersey is tantalizing for fans in Montreal and Colorado, but it’s a fantasy. This isn’t a Ray Bourque situation, where a veteran legend who had never won a Stanley Cup was traded to a contender for one last shot at glory.
Crosby has already hoisted the Cup three times with the Penguins. He’s not chasing a championship in the same way Bourque was. His legacy in Pittsburgh is secure, and his loyalty to the city and the franchise runs deep. I’ve always said I don’t see Sidney Crosby leaving Pittsburgh, and for now, that holds true.
The One Scenario That Could Reignite Crosby Rumors
However, that doesn’t mean the rumors will disappear entirely. If the Penguins stumble out of the gate and are significantly out of the playoff picture by the Christmas break, you can bet the “Crosby to a contender” narrative will pick up steam once again.
While a trade remains highly unlikely, a prolonged slump could force a difficult conversation between Crosby and the Penguins’ front office about the future. For now, though, Penguins fans can breathe a sigh of relief.
