The Toronto Maple Leafs are at a crossroads. After a summer of significant changes, the forward group is already looking different with the departure of Mitch Marner, but the blue line has remained surprisingly static. While stability can be a virtue, for a team that has struggled with defensive consistency and offensive contributions from the back end, it feels more like a missed opportunity.
The core of Jake McCabe, Chris Tanev, Morgan Rielly, Brandon Carlo, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Simon Benoit is solid, but is it enough to get the Leafs over the hump? I, for one, have my doubts.
A New Rumor Heats Up the Offseason
Just when it seemed like the Maple Leafs might be standing pat on defense, a new and intriguing rumor has surfaced. According to retired Toronto sports writer Howard Berger, the Leafs have been in discussions with the Utah Mammoth about defenseman Mikhail Sergachev. Now this is the kind of move that gets you excited.
Sergachev, 27, with a cap hit of $8.5 million and a full no-movement clause, is a high-impact player who could transform Toronto’s blue line. He’s a dynamic, puck-moving defenseman who put up 53 points last season, and his offensive instincts are exactly what the Leafs have been missing from their back end. The team ranked near the bottom of the league in goals and points by defensemen in 2024-25, a glaring weakness that has to be addressed if they want to be a serious contender.
Of course, the big question is how the Leafs could possibly make this work. With only $1.9 million in current cap space, GM Brad Treliving would have to get incredibly creative. A trade of this magnitude would almost certainly require a significant contract going the other way, and one has to think that names like Morgan Rielly or Brandon Carlo would be in the conversation. While the Utah Mammoth just acquired Sergachev a year ago, it’s the kind of bold move that Treliving has shown he’s not afraid to explore.
It’s a long shot, to be sure, but the fact that the Leafs are even kicking the tires on a player of Sergachev’s caliber is a sign that they know the current defensive corps isn’t the finished product. This is a rumor worth watching closely as the offseason unfolds.
