Did Nico Hischier just open the door for a massive offseason blockbuster? When asked recently about signing an extension under a new general manager, the New Jersey Devils captain didn’t exactly pledge his eternal loyalty to the Garden State. “I’m focusing on playing hockey here,” Hischier said. “I still have one more year. I’m with the Devils right now, and then we’ll see what happens.”
That simple “we’ll see what happens” has sent shockwaves through the NHL. James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now immediately noted that if there is any hesitancy from Hischier about re-signing, the next Devils GM is practically obligated to explore the trade market. Nichols even dropped a couple of bombshell hypotheticals: packaging Hischier to the Minnesota Wild for Quinn Hughes, or to the Ottawa Senators for Brady Tkachuk.
If you are a hockey fan, those names alone are enough to make you stop scrolling and start sketching out line combinations. Let’s dive into what this means for the Devils and the rest of the league.
Why the Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators Are Targeting Hischier
My take as an NHL analyst? The New Jersey Devils will be the most fascinating team to watch this offseason. It’ll be incredibly telling to see who they bring in as general manager, and whether that new executive intends to lightly tinker with the roster or detonate a core piece to reshape the team’s identity.
Hischier’s future will be the defining decision facing this new GM. At 27 years old, the center is arguably one of the top five two-way players in the league. He plays a premium position, has a highly manageable cap hit of $7.25 million for next season, and controls his destiny to an extent with a 10-team no-trade list.
If Hischier officially hits the trade block, 30 other general managers will be calling. The Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators both desperately need what he brings. Ottawa has been searching for a defensively responsible, elite top-six center to stabilize their young core. Minnesota is always hunting for premier talent down the middle.
However, Nichols’ specific trade proposals raise some serious expert eyebrows. Suggesting the Wild would trade Quinn Hughes is certainly a head-scratcher, considering Minnesota just emptied the vault to acquire him from the Vancouver Canucks back in December 2025! Flipping their newly acquired superstar blueliner so quickly seems highly unlikely. Whether that was a slip of the tongue for a massive three-way trade, or a mix-up with another premium NHL defenseman, the underlying point remains true: to pry Nico Hischier out of New Jersey, you have to give up a franchise-altering player.
The Ottawa Senators proposition. Brady Tkachuk for Nico Hischier is the kind of old-school, one-for-one hockey trade we rarely see anymore. It’s highly doubtful Ottawa parts with their captain and unicorn power forward, but from New Jersey’s perspective, adding Tkachuk’s grit alongside Jack Hughes would instantly change the DNA of the franchise.
The General Manager’s Dilemma: Keep Hischier or Rebuild?
Ultimately, trading a player of Hischier’s caliber creates a massive hole at center that is nearly impossible to fill. But if he won’t extend, the Devils cannot afford to lose him for nothing. Keep your eyes glued to this situation, it’s going to be a wild summer (No pun intended!).
