The important detail, however, is that the report did not identify Montreal as the unnamed trade partner.
What we can say with confidence is that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has shown serious interest. Sportsnet previously reported that Montreal took a “hard run” at Marchenko and was “hot after him” around the 2026 NHL Draft. That makes the Canadiens a credible participant, not simply a team attached to the rumor because Marchenko would look good beside Ivan Demidov.
My read is that Montreal has both the motivation and the assets to complete a deal. The unanswered question is whether Hughes will meet what should be a substantial asking price without sacrificing a foundational part of the Canadiens’ prospect pool.

There is also a public contradiction to consider. Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell previously said he expected Marchenko to be in Columbus when the season began. Reserving room for all of those bonuses would reduce Montreal’s theoretical cushion after acquiring Marchenko to approximately $1.58 million. That is tight, but it shows Montreal could absorb his current contract without an immediate dollar-for-dollar salary dump.
Marchenko’s cap hit represents only about 3.7 percent of the $104 million NHL salary cap. For a player who just produced 67 points, that is outstanding short-term value. The larger financial question is what his next contract could cost.
What Should the Columbus Blue Jackets Demand?
The Blue Jackets should not move Marchenko for a quantity-based collection of secondary assets. He is a prime-aged scorer, remains under team control, and led Columbus in goals for a third consecutive season. A trade only makes sense if it improves the Blue Jackets in another significant area.
In my valuation, a reasonable Montreal offer would need to include a premium prospect or a young NHL-ready player, plus a first-round pick or another high-end asset. Columbus should seek quality over quantity.
The Canadiens should be willing to pay a strong price, but Hughes must maintain clear boundaries. Suzuki, Caufield, Demidov and Hutson should not enter the conversation. Trading one of those foundational players would defeat the purpose of acquiring Marchenko in the first place.
I would also want Montreal to receive permission to discuss the framework of a contract extension before surrendering its best available assets. Marchenko would remain under team control as an RFA, but arbitration rights and a rising salary cap could make his next contract considerably more expensive.
My Verdict on the Canadiens–Marchenko Trade Rumor
