Shane Wright’s time with the Seattle Kraken appears to be coming to an end, and a change of scenery may be exactly what the talented young centre needs to restart his NHL trajectory.
Wright’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, has now confirmed that Kraken general manager Jason Botterill “has agreed to move Shane this summer to a team in need of a top young centre.” That statement is important because it validates months of reporting that Seattle was prepared to include Wright in a larger trade for a proven top-six scoring forward.
The Philadelphia Flyers should immediately be considered one of the most intriguing destinations, but only under one important condition. If the Anaheim Ducks match Philadelphia’s five-year, $90-million offer sheet for Leo Carlsson, the Flyers would once again need a young centre and would retain the four first-round picks they would otherwise surrender as compensation. In that scenario, Philadelphia becomes my leading candidate to acquire Wright. If Anaheim declines to match, the Flyers will get Carlsson and probably exit the Wright market altogether.
Why the Seattle Kraken Are Ready to Trade Shane Wright
Seattle did not suddenly decide that Wright has no NHL value. This is more about roster construction, player usage and the Kraken’s need for a legitimate offensive difference-maker.
The Kraken have been searching for a top-six forward who can potentially play on their first line. Wright is one of the organization’s most valuable young trade assets, which makes him a logical centrepiece in a larger package. The Fourth Period first reported in January that Seattle was willing to package Wright to obtain that level of player, and Elliotte Friedman subsequently confirmed that Wright’s availability was real.
That earlier reporting has now proven accurate. What began as trade-deadline speculation has developed into a situation where the player’s agent is publicly confirming that both sides are working toward a summer trade.
Wright finished the 2025-26 season with 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points, a considerable decline from the 19 goals and 44 points he recorded the previous year. He also averaged only 13:48 of ice time per game, including approximately 1:36 on the power play. Those are not insignificant minutes, but they are also not the type of deployment normally associated with developing a former fourth-overall pick into a dependable top-six centre.
Wright’s underlying offensive profile also offers a reason for optimism. His shot production remained relatively similar, but his shooting percentage fell from 20.9 percent in 2024-25 to 12.4 percent last season. Some regression from his unusually high 2024-25 shooting rate was inevitable, but that drop suggests his reduced production was not entirely caused by a deterioration in his offensive ability.

Why a Change of Scenery Could Unlock Shane Wright
My read on Wright is that he has reached the point where a new organization could benefit both the player and the Kraken.
Seattle has Matty Beniers, Chandler Stephenson and a collection of other forwards competing for offensive minutes. Wright has consequently spent much of his young career moving between different roles rather than being given an extended opportunity as a featured offensive centre.
That does not mean he has earned a guaranteed first-line position. Wright still needs to improve his pace, consistency and ability to create offence when he does not have the puck. However, young players also require defined roles. A team acquiring Wright should put him between two skilled wingers, give him regular second-unit power-play minutes and accept that there will be mistakes during the adjustment period.
At 22 years old, Wright remains far too young to label as a failed draft pick. Centres frequently take longer to develop because of the defensive responsibilities attached to the position. His 44-point performance in 2024-25 showed that he can produce in the NHL when his confidence and finishing are working together.
NHLTradeRumor.com Shane Wright trade-value model
| Category | Score | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Age and upside | 24/30 | Wright remains a controllable 22-year-old centre |
| Contract value | 19/20 | One season remains at an $886,666 cap hit |
| NHL production | 13/25 | Production declined to 27 points last season |
| Position scarcity | 13/15 | Young right-shot centres remain difficult to acquire |
| Team control | 9/10 | Wright will be an RFA after his contract expires |
| Overall trade value | 78/100 | Valuable primary asset, but not enough alone for an elite scorer |
This is my trade-value model based on age, position, production, contract efficiency and remaining team control. It is not based on information supplied privately by an NHL club.
Wright remains signed through the 2026-27 season at a cap hit of $886,666 before becoming a restricted free agent. That contract gives an acquiring team one inexpensive season to evaluate him before negotiating his next deal.
Philadelphia Flyers Become the Favourite If Anaheim Matches Leo Carlsson’s Offer Sheet
The Flyers recently entered trade discussions involving Wright, according to David Pagnotta. Philadelphia’s need at centre, however, is currently tied directly to Anaheim’s decision on Carlsson.
Philadelphia signed Carlsson to a five-year offer sheet worth $90 million, carrying an $18-million average annual value. The Ducks have seven days to match. If Anaheim refuses, the Flyers will receive their franchise centre but surrender four consecutive first-round selections.
If the Ducks match, Philadelphia keeps those draft picks and avoids the $18-million cap commitment. The Flyers could then turn their attention to Wright, who would cost just $886,666 next season.
NHLTradeRumor.com contract comparison
| Player | 2026-27 cap hit | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Leo Carlsson offer sheet | $18,000,000 | — |
| Shane Wright | $886,666 | $17,113,334 less |
That $17.11-million figure is a direct comparison of the two individual contract cap hits. It is not a calculation of Philadelphia’s complete projected salary-cap space.
This is why I would make Philadelphia the conditional favourite, not the current outright favourite. If Anaheim matches, Wright gives the Flyers a much less expensive way to address the centre position while preserving the financial flexibility needed to continue building around Matvei Michkov and their young core.
Philadelphia would still need to satisfy Seattle’s asking price. The Kraken reportedly prefer to package Wright in a larger deal for an established top-tier forward rather than trade him exclusively for futures. That could make a straightforward Wright-for-picks proposal less attractive unless Seattle has another move arranged.
The Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators have also been publicly linked to Wright and should remain in the conversation. Both could offer him a larger offensive role, but Philadelphia has the most compelling combination of need, financial flexibility and young talent, provided Carlsson remains with the Ducks.
Ultimately, trading Wright could become one of those rare moves that works for everyone. Seattle can use his value to pursue the high-end scorer it has lacked, while Wright can join an organization prepared to give him a clearly defined top-six development path.
The talent that made Wright the fourth-overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft has not disappeared. His Seattle tenure simply never developed the way either side expected. At this stage, another season of uncertain usage would accomplish very little. A trade would give Wright a fresh opportunity, and it would allow the Kraken to reshape their offence around players who better fit Botterill’s vision.
