The Winnipeg Jets just added Stuart Skinner, and that one move has made the Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors impossible to ignore.
On the surface, signing Skinner to a two-year contract gives Winnipeg a proven NHL goalie who can handle starts, survive pressure, and provide legitimate insurance behind one of the best goaltenders of this generation. But that is exactly why this move feels bigger than a simple backup signing. Teams do not usually spend meaningful cap space on insurance unless they believe there is at least a chance they may need it.
That is why Murat Ates of The Athletic is right to keep the Hellebuyck watch alive. Skinner does not fix Winnipeg’s second-line scoring issue. He does not transform the blue line. He does not replace the impact of an elite franchise goalie. What he does is give the Winnipeg Jets a safety net if the front office decides the time has come to reshape the roster around a different structure.
And with Connor Hellebuyck connected to the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes, this rumor has suddenly moved from background noise to one of the most fascinating NHL trade storylines of the offseason.
Why Stuart Skinner’s Signing Keeps the Connor Hellebuyck Trade Watch Alive
The biggest mistake fans can make is looking at Skinner’s signing as a direct replacement for Hellebuyck. He is not that. Hellebuyck is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, a franchise pillar, and still one of the most valuable goalies in the NHL when he is playing at his highest level.
But Skinner gives the Jets flexibility. That matters.
If Winnipeg trades Hellebuyck, they are not forced into panic mode. Skinner can split games, bridge the gap, and allow the Jets to focus the trade return on forwards, defensemen, prospects, and draft capital rather than demanding a goalie back in the deal. That opens more trade possibilities.
From my perspective, this looks like classic front-office positioning. The Jets do not have to trade Hellebuyck, but they have now protected themselves in case the market finally meets their asking price. That is smart asset management, especially when dealing with a goalie who still has major term and a significant cap hit.
The reported Buffalo Sabres connection makes sense because Buffalo has been hunting for a true difference-maker in goal for years. The Sabres have young pieces, prospects, and a fan base desperate for a serious move. Hellebuyck would instantly change their credibility.
The Carolina Hurricanes angle is also intriguing. Carolina is always aggressive when elite talent becomes available, and a goalie of Hellebuyck’s caliber behind their defensive structure would be terrifying. The challenge is cap fit and trade cost.
Connor Hellebuyck Trade Value: What Would the Jets Need Back?
Here is my personal trade-value read: Winnipeg cannot move Hellebuyck for a soft futures package. If the Jets trade him, the return has to include at least one premium young NHL player or blue-chip prospect, plus a first-round pick or equivalent value.
My trade-value model would break Hellebuyck down this way:
Elite goalie impact: 40/40
Contract certainty: 18/25
Age and term risk: 12/20
Trade protection/cap complexity: 6/10
Market scarcity: 10/10
Total trade value score: 86/105
That puts him in the “franchise-altering but complicated” trade tier. He is not a rental. He is not a distressed asset. But he is also not an easy contract for every team to absorb.
From a salary-cap standpoint, the Jets carrying both Hellebuyck and Skinner would mean a major investment in the crease. Hellebuyck’s $8.5 million cap hit plus Skinner’s $3.75 million AAV creates a $12.25 million goalie tandem. That can work temporarily, but if Winnipeg still needs second-line scoring and defensive upgrades, that money could become difficult to justify long term.
That is why Skinner feels like insurance, not a luxury.
The most likely outcome? I still believe the Jets only trade Connor Hellebuyck if another team gets aggressive. Buffalo would have to put a serious package on the table. Carolina would need to make the money work. Winnipeg cannot afford to lose this trade from a public-relations standpoint, because Hellebuyck is not just another player. He has been the backbone of the franchise.
But the signing of Skinner tells us something important: the Jets are preparing for every scenario.
If Hellebuyck stays, Winnipeg has one of the more experienced goalie tandems in the NHL. If he goes, they have already softened the landing. That is not an accident. That is a front office making sure it does not get trapped.
