The Montreal Canadiens may have another intriguing option in their continuing search for help down the middle, and this one could lead general manager Kent Hughes directly to the Calgary Flames.
Calgary centre Morgan Frost has surfaced as a potential Canadiens trade fit, with a discussion on The Sick Podcast in which Jimmy Murphy examined whether Montreal should pursue the 27-year-old. Even more interesting was the possibility floated during the discussion that Calgary defenceman Zach Whitecloud could become part of a larger package.
Before Canadiens fans start building trade packages, there is an important distinction: there has been no confirmation that Montreal and Calgary are actively negotiating a Frost trade. This is currently an NHL trade rumor built around player availability and roster fit. However, Frost and Whitecloud have separately been identified as players Calgary could move, giving this speculation more substance than a random trade proposal.
From my perspective, Frost is exactly the type of calculated gamble Hughes should be investigating.
He doesn’t carry the acquisition cost of a superstar centre, he is entering what should be the prime years of his career, and he has enough offensive skill to potentially provide Montreal with another legitimate option behind its top line.
Why Morgan Frost Could Fit the Montreal Canadiens
Frost is coming off a 22-goal, 21-assist, 43-point season in 82 games for the Calgary Flames. He averaged 2:30 of power-play time per game and finished with a 49.0 percent expected-goals share, including a positive 2.1 relative expected-goals percentage. Those numbers don’t suggest Montreal would be acquiring an established star, but they do show a player capable of contributing offensively without requiring an enormous commitment.
That distinction matters.
I don’t view Frost as the type of acquisition that suddenly transforms the Canadiens into a Stanley Cup favourite. I see him as a potential value play, a talented former first-round pick who might still have another offensive level if Montreal puts him alongside its young skill.
Frost’s skating and playmaking could be particularly interesting in a lineup containing players such as Ivan Demidov. Montreal doesn’t necessarily need another player who dominates possession of the puck every shift. It needs someone who can support its elite young offensive talent, attack open ice and convert opportunities.
There is also familiarity with the type of acquisition.
During the podcast discussion, Murphy described Frost as the sort of young player whose potential has not been completely realized and suggested Montreal should investigate the opportunity. His simplest assessment of the possibility was that it is something Montreal has to examine.
Morgan Frost’s Contract Makes a Canadiens Trade Possible
Financially, this is where the rumor becomes especially interesting.
Frost carries a $4.375 million cap hit for the 2026-27 season before becoming eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2027. His contract also contains an eight-team no-trade list this season.
PuckPedia currently projects Montreal with approximately $9.784 million in 2026-27 cap space. If the Canadiens acquired Frost without sending any NHL salary back, my calculation leaves Montreal with approximately:
$9,783,924 – $4,375,000 = $5,408,924 in remaining cap space.
That means Hughes could absorb Frost’s entire contract without requiring Calgary to retain salary.
That financial flexibility is important because it potentially allows Montreal to use its cap space as part of the negotiation rather than forcing the Flames into a complicated salary-matching exercise.

My Trade Value Score views Frost as a valuable but attainable trade target. His production, age and reasonable cap hit create value, while his proximity to unrestricted free agency prevents Calgary from reasonably demanding the type of package associated with a young, cost-controlled No. 1 centre.
A 68/100 score is meaningful. It suggests Calgary should receive a legitimate asset for Frost, but Montreal should not be paying the price associated with a younger centre carrying multiple seasons of team control.
My preferred Canadiens approach would be to keep Montreal’s highest-end prospects out of the conversation and construct a package around secondary assets, depending on what Calgary actually wants.

Could Zach Whitecloud Be Added to a Bigger Calgary Flames Trade?
This is where the rumor becomes much more fascinating.
Murphy also floated the possibility of Frost and Zach Whitecloud being included in the same transaction. Again, there is no report that Calgary and Montreal have discussed such a package, but Whitecloud has also been identified as an available Flames player.
Whitecloud carries a $2.75 million cap hit through 2027-28. Acquiring both Frost and Whitecloud without sending salary back would add $7.125 million to Montreal’s books, leaving approximately $2.659 million of the Canadiens’ current projected cap space.
That math is important because it shows a two-player deal is financially possible.
Whether it makes sense from an asset-management standpoint is a completely different question.
Personally, I would be more aggressive in pursuing Frost alone. Montreal’s biggest potential gain would come from giving a talented centre a better offensive environment and seeing whether he can move beyond the 40-point range. Whitecloud could certainly add value, but adding him turns a relatively straightforward upside bet into a much more expensive trade package.
Why Kent Hughes Should At Least Call the Calgary Flames
There is no need for Montreal to force this trade.
That may actually be Frost’s biggest appeal.
The Canadiens have enough cap flexibility to make a deal, Calgary appears willing to listen, and Frost’s contract situation should prevent his trade value from climbing into unreasonable territory. Calgary currently lists Frost as part of its roster, and no trade involving him has been announced as of August 13.
If I’m Kent Hughes, I make the call.
I find out whether Calgary views Frost as part of its future or simply as another asset in an ongoing roster retool. If the asking price is reasonable, Montreal could be buying a 27-year-old centre at exactly the point where a change of scenery and more talented linemates might unlock another level.
That is not a blockbuster.
But sometimes the smartest NHL trades are the ones that don’t look like blockbusters when they’re made.
