The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to Patrik Laine, and this is one NHL rumor that deserves more attention than the typical August free-agent speculation.
According to Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, the Maple Leafs are among several teams connected to the unrestricted free-agent winger this summer. Toronto joins the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers as possible destinations. More importantly, this isn’t the first time Laine and Toronto have been mentioned together. Elliotte Friedman reported in March that there had been discussions about Laine potentially ending up in Toronto or Philadelphia before the 2026 NHL trade deadline, although nothing ultimately materialized.
That history is what makes the latest Patrik Laine Toronto Maple Leafs rumor interesting.
Laine is now available without Toronto surrendering a draft pick or prospect. And if the former 44-goal scorer can really be signed for somewhere around the reported $1.5 million range on a one-year contract, this suddenly becomes the type of calculated gamble the Maple Leafs should at least explore.
Why Patrik Laine Could Make Sense for the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs shouldn’t be looking at Laine expecting the superstar who scored 44 goals for Winnipeg in 2017-18. That’s no longer the evaluation.
The question should be much simpler: Can Patrik Laine still score enough goals to outperform a relatively inexpensive one-year contract?
I believe there’s a legitimate chance he can.
Laine’s 2025-26 season was essentially lost. He appeared in only five games for the Montreal Canadiens, recording one assist after undergoing core-muscle surgery. However, the previous season offered a reminder that his shot hasn’t disappeared. Laine scored 20 goals in only 52 games during 2024-25, with much of his offensive damage coming on the power play.
That’s where Toronto becomes fascinating.
You don’t need Laine to carry an NHL line anymore. You don’t need him playing 20 minutes every night or being relied upon as one of your best defensive forwards. Put him in offensive situations, give him power-play opportunities and let one of the best natural shooting releases of his generation become the weapon.
Zurkowsky even floated the possibility of Laine playing alongside Auston Matthews, which would reunite the first and second selections from the 2016 NHL Draft in the same lineup.
Would I automatically put Laine beside Matthews? No.
I’d make Laine earn that position.
But having the option of moving a 6-foot-5 right-shot sniper into an offensive role alongside Toronto’s skilled forwards is exactly why a cheap contract becomes enticing.
Laine also sounds motivated for another opportunity. Following Montreal’s season, he told reporters, “I just kind of need an opportunity. Great shape, feel good.”
At 28 years old, he’s still young enough that completely writing him off would be premature.

The Maple Leafs’ Biggest Patrik Laine Problem Is the Salary Cap
Here’s where the rumor becomes complicated.
PuckPedia currently projects the Toronto Maple Leafs at $2,752,382 over the $104 million salary cap, with a 23-player active roster. Laine therefore can’t simply be dropped into Toronto’s lineup without another transaction occurring.
Using the roughly $1.5 million contract estimate cited in the Laine reporting, my NHLTradeRumor.com cap calculation would put Toronto approximately $4.252 million over the cap if Laine were added without any corresponding move.
That doesn’t mean Toronto needs to trade a $4.25-million player specifically. Roster demotions, trades and other cap-related transactions can change the calculation. But it demonstrates something important: a Laine signing would almost certainly be connected to another roster decision.
And that’s ultimately why I don’t consider a signing imminent simply because Toronto has been linked to him.
The Leafs have work to do first.
The Earlier Patrik Laine-Leafs Report Is Important
There is another reason I wouldn’t dismiss this rumor.
Friedman’s March report established that a possible Laine-to-Toronto scenario had already been discussed before the trade deadline. It didn’t happen, so that earlier report did not result in Laine becoming a Maple Leaf. But the fact Toronto has resurfaced among the teams connected to him as an unrestricted free agent provides continuity to the story rather than creating an entirely new connection out of nowhere.
The circumstances have also changed dramatically.
Toronto would have previously needed Montreal’s cooperation to acquire Laine and deal with an $8.7-million cap hit. Laine’s four-year, $34.8-million contract has now expired, leaving him an unrestricted free agent who can choose his next destination.
At $8.7 million, I wouldn’t want the Leafs anywhere near this gamble.
At approximately $1.5 million for one season?
I’m interested.
The upside is obvious. If Laine stays healthy and scores 20-plus goals while contributing on Toronto’s power play, the contract could become one of the better value signings of the offseason. If he can’t rediscover his game, a short-term inexpensive commitment limits the damage.
That’s the type of risk-reward equation the Maple Leafs should be willing to investigate.
The rumor isn’t at the point where anyone should be ordering a Laine Leafs jersey. But considering the previous Toronto discussions, his unrestricted free-agent status and his potentially depressed asking price, there is enough here to keep watching.
