Connor Hellebuyck’s next big moment with the Winnipeg Jets may have nothing to do with stopping a puck. Friday, October 23, is the reported end of his disciplinary suspension, raising a question neither side appears eager to answer: What happens if the three-time Vezina Trophy winner is eligible to return to a team he has asked to leave?
The Los Angeles Kings have entered the conversation, and this is more than a hypothetical fit dreamed up by fans. Sportsnet’s Frank Seravalli reported that the Kings had checked on the asking price and received indications Hellebuyck would accept a trade to Los Angeles.
That’s the twist. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is balancing Hellebuyck’s elite reputation, an $8.5-million cap hit, the Jets’ surprisingly competitive start, and the risk of reopening an uncomfortable situation in the dressing room. From my perspective, the calendar is adding pressure without removing Winnipeg’s bargaining power.
Why October 23 Matters for Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets
Elliotte Friedman reported October 17 that Hellebuyck had told Winnipeg before its October 2 opener that he intended to end his absence and report. Because he missed training camp without permission, the Jets could impose a disciplinary suspension under Article 15.13(c)(v) of the collective bargaining agreement. According to Friedman’s sources, that suspension expires October 23.
This is an important distinction for readers following Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors. The date does not automatically trigger a trade, contract termination, or appearance in the starting lineup. It creates a fresh management decision: reintegrate him, negotiate a transaction, or determine what legitimate roster and disciplinary options remain available.
The situation was not invented overnight. Hellebuyck publicly confirmed his trade request August 27; Winnipeg suspended him when he failed to report in September. The October 17 reporting introduces a new and significant detail: he reportedly signalled a willingness to come back before the season began.
The Road to October 23
October 23 is a reported suspension expiry date, not an official NHL trade deadline. Reporting: NHL.com and Sportsnet.
The most revealing response came from Winnipeg’s own room. After Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Carolina, coach Scott Arniel made clear that his immediate focus remained preparing his team, while captain Adam Lowry acknowledged that a return would require conversations.
That is a difficult environment in which to simply reinstall a former franchise cornerstone and pretend nothing happened.
Why the Los Angeles Kings Are a Serious Trade Possibility
Los Angeles has at least investigated the cost. Kings general manager Ken Holland had sought clarity on Winnipeg’s price, although the depth of negotiations remained uncertain.
Just as important, the report said Hellebuyck apparently would agree to a move to LA. With his full no-movement clause still active in 2026-27, that approval matters as much as a draft pick.
There’s an obvious hockey argument. Midway through October’s opening stretch, Los Angeles had received an .848 combined save percentage from Darcy Kuemper and Anton Forsberg.
Hellebuyck posted an .895 save percentage during a disappointing 2025-26 Jets season, yet owns a .916 career NHL mark.
Those are different sample sizes and not a prediction of what would happen in California. Still, when a team with playoff ambitions is getting substandard early goaltending, checking the price on an accomplished starter is entirely rational.
Could the Los Angeles Kings Afford Connor Hellebuyck?
The hockey fit is easier to imagine than the financial mechanics. Hellebuyck carries an $8.5-million annual cap hit through 2030-31. Kuemper counts $5.25 million, while Forsberg counts $2.25 million.
The Kings have roughly $977,000 in projected cap space. Those figures can move with daily transactions.
A simple one-for-one goalie swap would not necessarily work, even if both clubs wanted it. Kuemper’s contract carries modified trade protection, and Winnipeg might prefer a top-six winger over another veteran goalie now that Stuart Skinner and Clay Stevenson are handling its crease.
What Would Hellebuyck Cost LA?

That cap chart highlights the cost of asking the Jets to retain salary.
At 25 percent retention, Winnipeg would carry $2.125 million of cap space each season for five years. At 50 percent, that obligation becomes $4.25 million annually, or $21.25 million in cumulative retained cap charges over the remaining contract.
Those aren’t small concessions for a club that still wants to contend.
What Winnipeg Actually Needs in a Hellebuyck Trade
The tempting mistake is to value Hellebuyck purely by his trophy collection.
He’s a three-time Vezina winner, the 2024-25 Hart Trophy recipient, and a major part of the Jets’ identity over the past decade. But goaltenders operate in a narrow trade market, and a 33-year-old with five seasons remaining on a substantial deal is different from a young first-line centre with the same accolades.
Cheveldayoff’s problem isn’t simply getting something back. It’s protecting the current Winnipeg Jets window.
Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey and the rest of the established core are not positioned for a slow reset.
One future first-round pick and a distant prospect might look respectable in a transaction graphic while doing little for the roster in November.
My preference would be to build any return around an NHL-ready scoring winger, then negotiate draft capital and short-term goaltending coverage.
That does not mean Los Angeles has offered such a player. It means Winnipeg should rank usable talent above the headline value of a hypothetical collection of picks.

This original editorial scorecard is not an insider projection or a measure of the odds of a trade. It simply tests proposed packages against four Winnipeg priorities.
A picks-only offer grades poorly because it fails to help this season; an NHL-ready winger plus valuable futures grades much better, provided salary and trade protections can actually be resolved.
Three Outcomes to Watch Before and After Friday
1. The Kings make a serious offer.
Los Angeles could become more aggressive if its early slide continues and the front office decides its veteran core still warrants a major bet.
A protected first-round pick might be part of the conversation, but Seravalli specifically identified concern over surrendering a 2027 or 2028 first if the season deteriorates. The worse the Kings play, the less comfortable that price may become.
2. Hellebuyck is eligible to return, and Winnipeg confronts the relationship.
A return would not automatically mean he starts the next game. Coaches must evaluate readiness, roster management and, most critically, trust.
Adam Lowry’s comments suggest that the players would deal with the issue professionally, but there is emotional ground to cover. This could also change the negotiating dynamic if teams conclude Winnipeg feels pressure to resolve the situation quickly.
3. Cheveldayoff waits for a better market.
Buffalo and Carolina have been linked to Hellebuyck in earlier reporting, and struggling contenders could emerge as the season develops.
Winnipeg’s goaltending tandem has reduced the urgency of immediately replacing his minutes. Waiting carries a risk of further distraction, but a rushed discount deal could be more damaging than an awkward few weeks.
One underappreciated detail is the contrast between Winnipeg’s needs and Los Angeles’ incentives.
The Jets want present-day help. The Kings may be reluctant to surrender a first-rounder that grows more valuable with each loss. Both sides can genuinely see a fit yet remain miles apart on a trade structure.
My Take: October 23 Is a Leverage Test, Not an Ultimatum
I would resist calling Friday a deadline. It is a leverage test.
A buyer may hope the approaching return lowers Winnipeg’s asking price, but Cheveldayoff has handled difficult trade requests before. His best move is to remain disciplined about what the team needs, rather than make a deal simply to quiet the conversation.
For the Kings, the bigger question is whether one brilliant goaltender fixes enough.
Hellebuyck would raise the ceiling in net, but he cannot erase defensive breakdowns, injuries, or offensive inconsistency on his own. Los Angeles should be buying a competitive window, not purchasing reassurance after a rough October.
My read is that Hellebuyck eventually moves, but the October 23 report makes a temporary return more plausible than many expected a week ago.
That is analysis, not a claim of inside information. Unless a deal is announced, Winnipeg still controls the asset, and Hellebuyck’s consent still shapes the destination.
The next meaningful updates are straightforward: confirmation of the suspension’s end, evidence of Hellebuyck reporting or skating, comments from Winnipeg’s leadership, and a credible report of a concrete trade framework.
Anything beyond that should be labelled speculation.
