The Carolina Hurricanes have reportedly changed their offer for Connor Hellebuyck, but the most revealing part of the proposal might be the player who isn’t included.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Carolina has an offer for the Winnipeg Jets goaltender that no longer involves unsigned defenseman Alexander Nikishin. That’s a notable shift with Friday, October 23, reportedly marking the end of Hellebuyck’s unpaid team suspension. Winnipeg now faces a difficult question: accept a package it hasn’t found compelling enough, allow its franchise goalie to return, or keep searching for a better trade.
The Hurricanes remain interested, but there is no confirmed Hellebuyck trade. The fascinating question is what Carolina can offer without Nikishin, and whether Winnipeg should risk waiting for a stronger proposal. After reviewing Carolina’s roster, Hellebuyck’s contract and the alternatives around the league, I believe the Jets must resist treating today like an artificial trade deadline.
Carolina Hurricanes Change Their Connor Hellebuyck Trade Offer
On Thursday’s 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman explained that Carolina has an offer for Hellebuyck which does not include Nikishin. His assessment was revealing: “if Nikishin was going to Winnipeg, this deal might be done already.”
The reporting, carried by Sportsnet, does not identify the other players or picks in Carolina’s proposal.
The distinction matters. A first-rounder, NHL-ready defender or top prospect might fit a hypothetical package, but none belongs in the reported offer without confirmation.
My takeaway: Eric Tulsky is looking for a workable deal without surrendering a player Carolina clearly values.
Why Alexander Nikishin Changes the Conversation
Nikishin, 25, is an unsigned restricted free agent. He recorded 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games for Carolina last season, then appeared in 17 playoff games during the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup run.
He requested a trade during the offseason and did not report to training camp, creating another unresolved situation for Tulsky.
For Winnipeg, an NHL-ready young defenseman could justify moving a star goaltender. A return built mostly around distant picks is harder to sell to a competitive dressing room.
Both clubs have unresolved player situations, but that doesn’t mean one deal solves them. Without Nikishin, Winnipeg needs comparable upside, not more lesser assets.
Why October 23 Matters for the Winnipeg Jets
Hellebuyck requested a trade during the offseason and missed camp. Friedman reported that the Jets imposed an unpaid suspension under the collective bargaining agreement, with October 23 identified as its expected end date.
That is a personnel decision point, not an official NHL trade deadline.
The Jets could welcome him back, negotiate a different arrangement or continue exploring trades. None of those outcomes was confirmed at publication.
Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel publicly said the organization was waiting to learn how the situation would unfold and hadn’t shut the door on Hellebuyck returning.
Trading a star to avoid an awkward weekend would be a mistake. Kevin Cheveldayoff must manage the room while protecting the Jets’ long-term asset base.
Why the Defending Stanley Cup Champion Hurricanes Are Interested
Carolina isn’t rebuilding. The Hurricanes won the 2026 Stanley Cup and are trying to keep their championship window open.
They also enter this season with a different goaltending setup after Frederik Andersen left for Edmonton. Pyotr Kochetkov and Brandon Bussi are under contract, giving Carolina options without eliminating the appeal of a proven veteran star.
Hellebuyck would provide a different type of certainty: a three-time Vezina Trophy winner with a Hart Trophy on his résumé and extensive experience carrying heavy workloads.
For a club that already creates pressure through its forecheck and territorial play, the idea of placing that résumé behind a deep lineup is understandable.
But fit isn’t necessity. Carolina has won without Hellebuyck, giving Tulsky reason to negotiate patiently. Winnipeg can counter that another Cup pursuit makes him particularly valuable.
What Hellebuyck’s Numbers Say About the Risk
The conversation shouldn’t stop at awards.
Hellebuyck posted a .925 save percentage in 2024-25 but slipped to .895 across 57 games in 2025-26. That is a 30-point drop in save percentage, or three percentage points, and a meaningful reminder that past dominance doesn’t eliminate future risk.

My read: one disappointing season doesn’t erase his record. Goaltending fluctuates with defensive structure and shot quality.
But at 33, Carolina would be buying future performance, not his 2025 awards. Waiting could also weaken Winnipeg’s leverage if his value slips.
Connor Hellebuyck Salary-Cap Breakdown: Can Carolina Fit Him?
Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million annual cap hit through 2030-31.
The NHL’s 2026-27 salary-cap ceiling is $104 million, making his full cap hit approximately 8.17% of a team’s permitted payroll.
From the beginning of this season through the end of the contract, that’s five seasons of $8.5 million cap charges, or $42.5 million in total annualized commitments.
Original calculation: $8.5M ÷ $104M 2026-27 cap ceiling = 8.17% of league limit at full cap hit. Scenarios are illustrative annual cap allocations, not reported offers. In-season calculations and roster compliance can differ. Sources: PuckPedia and NHL/NHLPA.
Carolina would commit considerable payroll through 2030-31, not just one playoff run.
Salary retention could help, but there is no verified report Winnipeg has offered it. The 25% and 50% cases in our calculation are hypothetical; in-season cap charges depend on timing and roster moves.
Original Trade-Value Model: What Should Winnipeg Demand?
Rather than inventing the identities of players in Carolina’s offer, I’ve built a transparent editorial model comparing three hypothetical package types.
The points are my estimates of relative asset value, not league measurements, negotiated prices or a forecast of what the Hurricanes will actually offer.
My weights: young impact NHL player (40), first-rounder (30), strong prospect (25), depth skater (15), second-rounder (12). The model emphasizes high-end upside rather than asset count.
Methodology: Scores use declared editorial weights for asset type, not player-specific scouting grades. No package shown has been reported or verified as a Carolina offer. Scores are for comparing structures only, not calculating an objectively fair price.
I prefer a package with a young impact NHL player, a first-rounder and a legitimate prospect.
The score is an editorial benchmark—not a prediction of Carolina’s offer.
Three Ways the Hellebuyck Trade Situation Could Develop
1. Carolina improves its proposal.
Tulsky could add a different premium young asset or higher-value draft compensation. That would keep Carolina in the conversation without including Nikishin.
Nothing public establishes that such an increase is coming.
2. Another team changes the market.
Buffalo and Utah have been linked to the Hellebuyck discussions, while the Rangers’ own goalie decisions could create a domino effect.
Competition matters only if credible alternatives are willing and able to complete a deal. Hellebuyck’s full no-movement clause also gives him approval over a destination.
3. Winnipeg chooses patience.
If offers remain below Cheveldayoff’s threshold, the Jets could postpone a trade and work through Hellebuyck’s roster status.
That approach introduces distractions but preserves the chance of a better return. It also avoids mistaking a reported suspension end date for a requirement to trade him immediately.
My Take: The Jets Should Set the Price, Not the Calendar
I understand why fans want this resolved. Prolonged uncertainty isn’t good for a team trying to establish an identity in October.
But the Jets’ negotiating objective should be straightforward: receive at least one asset that can shape their next competitive core, plus enough additional value to justify surrendering a former league MVP.
If Carolina won’t include Nikishin, fine. Then the alternative needs comparable upside somewhere else in the transaction.
A package overflowing with conditional picks and depth pieces might look busy without replacing the value of a foundational player.
Conversely, Carolina would be foolish to ignore his recent statistical decline, age and long contract simply because the name on the jersey is Hellebuyck.
That’s the tension that makes this rumor credible and compelling.
Both general managers have reasonable reasons to walk away. A meaningful trade only happens if one side changes its valuation or finds a structure neither has considered acceptable yet.
Latest Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors: What to Watch Next
Watch for an official roster-status update, confirmation Hellebuyck has rejoined team activities, or credible specifics on a revised package.
Buffalo’s and Utah’s goalie decisions could also reshape the market.
For now, the clearest development is Carolina’s willingness to continue discussing Hellebuyck without Nikishin.
Winnipeg has a decision to make, but the smartest decision may be refusing a deal that does not meet its price.
