The Toronto Maple Leafs have explored a trade for one of the NHL’s most intriguing young defencemen. But just as Simon Edvinsson emerged as a possible target, the Detroit Red Wings delivered a message that sounded unmistakable: they want to keep him.
According to The Fourth Period’s October 13 report, Toronto held loose, exploratory discussions with Detroit about Edvinsson, a 23-year-old restricted free agent who remains unsigned. A deal was not believed close. One day later, Detroit interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said he had “zero interest” in trading the Swedish blueliner. That does not erase Toronto’s inquiry, but it drastically changes how we should read the rumour.
Here is the real story: Chris Tanev’s injury has increased Toronto’s need for defensive insurance, Edvinsson has not played this season because of his contract dispute, and Detroit is publicly insisting it will not move him. Can the Maple Leafs find an opening, or is this the moment to search elsewhere?
Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Rumors: What Was Actually Reported?
The distinction between a phone call and an active negotiation matters. The Fourth Period reported that Toronto had discussed defensive options with several teams, including exploratory contact with the Carolina Hurricanes about Alexander Nikishin and the Red Wings about Edvinsson. Neither pursuit was described as close to completion.
That makes this a legitimate Toronto Maple Leafs trade rumour, not evidence that a blockbuster has been agreed to or even formally proposed.
Detroit’s answer became clearer on October 14. Speaking to reporters, Horcoff rejected the idea of dealing Edvinsson and reiterated his intention to sign him.
My interpretation is straightforward: Toronto made a sensible inquiry, while Detroit used a public platform to reinforce its negotiating position. Both things can be true. What cannot be claimed, based on these reports, is that the Maple Leafs are closing in on Edvinsson.
Why Chris Tanev’s Injury Has Toronto Looking Around
Toronto’s interest becomes easier to understand when you examine its blue line. Tanev, 36, was hurt during the Leafs’ October 10 win in Colorado and subsequently placed on injured reserve with an upper-body issue. The team was still evaluating the problem when the trade reporting surfaced, and no firm return date had been established.
TSN’s Chris Johnston urged caution about assuming the worst, noting that the Maple Leafs wanted more information before making a rushed decision. That is an important detail: an injury can justify exploring the market without justifying an expensive emergency trade.
Tanev is more than a name on the depth chart. He is a defensive stabilizer, someone Toronto counts on for positioning, penalty killing, shot blocking and protecting leads. He also appeared in only 11 games last season because of injuries.
Yet Edvinsson and Tanev are not interchangeable. Tanev is a veteran right-shot defender valued for reliability; Edvinsson is a towering left-shot defender whose appeal lies in mobility, reach and future top-pair potential. Acquiring Edvinsson would be a long-term roster investment, not merely a short-term replacement.
Why Simon Edvinsson Would Be a Major Addition
The Detroit Red Wings selected Edvinsson sixth overall in 2021, and his recent usage demonstrates why teams would ask about him. During 2024-25, he scored 31 points in 78 games while averaging 21:07 of ice time. In 2025-26, he produced 25 points in 72 games, but his average ice time climbed to 22:21.
That 74-second increase in nightly responsibility matters more to me than the six-point decline. Coaches can reduce sheltered minutes, give a promising defender more difficult situations and learn whether he handles the heavier workload. Edvinsson also recorded 148 blocked shots and 94 hits last season, alongside nine goals.
The appeal is not that he will immediately become Toronto’s leading offensive defenceman. It is that a 6-foot-6 player with this skating profile can defend space, break pressure and support skilled forwards without needing to chase every play.
Simon Edvinsson: Two-Season Trend
Detroit Red Wings Contract Standoff Changes the Equation
Edvinsson’s entry-level contract expired after 2025-26. He is an unsigned restricted free agent, with a previous cap hit of $894,167. He has not appeared in a Detroit game this season, and his return from Sweden to train in North America should not be confused with a signed agreement.
Johnston’s reporting stated that Edvinsson was returning to train with someone he trusts. Johnston cautioned that the move was not proof of a contract breakthrough. Edvinsson must sign by December 1 to be eligible to play in the NHL this season.
This is the leverage battle Toronto would enter. The player’s frustration creates attention, but restricted free agency still gives Detroit meaningful control over his NHL rights.
There is another reason Horcoff may hold firm. Detroit has just signed Alex DeBrincat to a seven-year, $91 million extension beginning next season. Management is signaling a desire to build around core players, not open another hole on the blue line. With Dylan Larkin’s situation already unsettled, moving Edvinsson would create another major organizational question.
The Salary-Cap Problem Toronto Cannot Ignore
A player’s availability is only half the trade equation. The Maple Leafs also have to sign Edvinsson to a new NHL contract. His old $894,167 cap hit is not the number Toronto would inherit in a new deal, and no agreed 2026-27 salary has been reported.
The league’s 2026-27 salary cap is $104 million. In our snapshot, Toronto shows approximately $4.925 million of cap space within an LTIR-influenced roster, but roughly $6.65 million in negative projected cap space.
To illustrate the challenge, consider hypothetical Edvinsson annual salaries of $6 million, $7.5 million and $9 million. Against that $4.925 million current-room snapshot, the simplified gaps would be about $1.075 million, $2.575 million and $4.075 million, respectively, before corresponding roster moves, injury returns or daily accounting changes. These are scenarios, not reported contract demands.
What Would Edvinsson Cost?
Toronto also has a full 50-contract register in that snapshot. Moving out a contract or otherwise creating a compliant path could be essential. And the club must protect itself when injured players return, because LTIR relief is not permanent free spending money. An Edvinsson deal might solve an on-ice problem while creating a financial problem unless the full sequence is planned.
What Would Detroit Actually Want in a Trade?
No reliable public report identifies an accepted offer or specific Edvinsson asking price. Any trade proposal naming Leafs prospects or draft picks as agreed compensation would be fiction. But the logic of a potential negotiation is clear.
Detroit would be surrendering a 23-year-old, former sixth-overall pick already trusted with top-pair minutes. To justify that loss, the Red Wings would likely need a young NHL-ready asset or premium future value that addresses a genuine organizational need.
Toronto must make the opposite calculation: how much future flexibility should it sacrifice for a player who still needs a contract, has missed games during a holdout and may not be available at any realistic price? I like Edvinsson’s long-term fit much more than I like the likely acquisition conditions.
Edvinsson to Toronto
Did Detroit Shut the Door on a Maple Leafs Blockbuster?
For now, yes in practical terms, though not in the literal sense that Detroit can never change its mind. Horcoff’s public comments are an unusually clear warning that Edvinsson is central to the Red Wings’ plans. The Maple Leafs cannot build their October strategy around convincing him otherwise.
If Tanev’s absence is short, Toronto can keep evaluating internal combinations while remaining alert for a more attainable defensive option. If the injury picture worsens, the front office can widen its search without committing to an extremely expensive target. Nikishin is another reported exploratory inquiry, not a deal around the corner.
My verdict: Edvinsson is precisely the kind of defenceman Toronto should investigate, but not the kind it should chase at any cost. The story today is not an imminent Maple Leafs blockbuster. It is an ambitious inquiry meeting a firm Detroit response — and a useful reminder that the best player available in theory is not always a player available in practice.
