The Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins meet Monday, October 5, with an early-season fantasy matchup that is more interesting than the standings alone suggest. Ottawa enters 1-0-0 after beating Toronto 3-2, while Boston is 2-1-0 after opening with wins over the Rangers and Jets before a 4-1 loss in Minnesota.
For fantasy managers, my biggest question is what happens on the blue line. Jake Sanderson left Ottawa’s opener after aggravating an undisclosed injury, while Boston is still without Charlie McAvoy because of his six-game suspension. Those absences could shift power-play time and offensive-zone deployment toward Thomas Chabot for Ottawa and Mason Lohrei or other Bruins defensemen.
Up front, Tim Stützle and Drake Batherson remain Ottawa’s most dangerous established fantasy combination, while Boston has already received immediate returns from newcomer JJ Peterka alongside David Pastrnak. Peterka has two goals through three games, and Pastrnak remains the Bruins player most likely to turn one strong offensive night into a multi-point fantasy performance.
The thing I will be watching most closely is special teams. Neither club has scored a power-play goal yet, and Boston’s early penalty kill has fallen to 57.1 percent. Three games is nowhere near enough to define a season, but it creates a potentially exploitable fantasy storyline tonight.
Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins Game Information
This is a regular-season Atlantic Division matchup at TD Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, which is 6:30 p.m. CT and 5:30 p.m. MT. NHL listings have NESN carrying the Boston regional broadcast, while Canadian coverage includes Sportsnet+ and TVA Sports. NHL Power Play on ESPN+ is also listed for U.S. out-of-market streaming, subject to blackout restrictions.
Ottawa’s long-term agreement keeps TSN 1200 as its English-language radio home, while Boston uses 98.5 The Sports Hub.
Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
The current numbers require context because Ottawa has played only once and Boston only three times. Ottawa is 1-0-0 with three goals scored and two allowed. Boston is 2-1-0 with eight goals scored and seven allowed, giving the Bruins averages of 2.67 goals for and 2.33 against per game. Ottawa’s single-game rates are 3.00 and 2.00.
The special-teams numbers are more eye-catching. Both teams are still at 0.0 percent on the power play. Ottawa killed three of Toronto’s four opportunities in its opener for a 75.0-percent penalty kill, while Boston is at just 57.1 percent after three games. I would not treat either percentage as predictive yet, but Boston’s penalty kill is the weakness most capable of turning into immediate fantasy value for Stützle, Batherson and Ottawa’s power-play quarterback.
Last season offers a larger sample. Ottawa scored 275 goals, compared with 268 for Boston, and the Senators produced a 24.0-percent power play. Boston finished at 23.4 percent. Ottawa also controlled the head-to-head matchup, going 3-0-1 against Boston. The Senators won 7-2, lost 3-2 in overtime, then won 5-3 and 6-2, outscoring the Bruins 20-10 across the four games. The most recent meeting was Ottawa’s 6-2 win at TD Garden on December 21.
Boston is 1-0-0 at home this season; Ottawa is 1-0-0 on the road. For me, that combination makes the historical series more useful than either current home-road split.

NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Senators vs. Bruins
Ottawa used Warren Foegele with Stützle and Batherson in its opener, while William Eklund skated with Dylan Cozens and Fabian Zetterlund. Those combinations give Ottawa two lines with legitimate transition skill. Stützle remains my preferred Senators fantasy play because he led Ottawa with 83 points last season and averaged more than 20 minutes per game. Batherson produced 33 goals and 71 points, including 13 power-play goals.
Chabot becomes much more interesting if Sanderson cannot dress. Chabot played 27:06 and had a goal and an assist in Toronto after Sanderson exited. More importantly for fantasy managers, missing Sanderson could push additional puck-moving and special-teams responsibility toward Ottawa’s new captain.
Boston used Peterka with Elias Lindholm and Pastrnak in its most recent official projected lineup. Peterka already has two goals, including the overtime winner against Winnipeg. Pastrnak hasn’t needed goals to make an impact; he had two assists in the Winnipeg comeback and remains the Bruins’ primary offensive engine after a 100-point 2025-26 season.
James Hagens is my deeper fantasy watch. The rookie scored his first NHL goal against Winnipeg and has been receiving power-play work. With Boston’s man advantage still searching for its first goal and McAvoy unavailable, I would watch whether Hagens earns more puck-carrying responsibility rather than focusing solely on his final point total.
In goal, Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark are the expected matchup, but neither starter had been officially confirmed at the time of this analysis. Swayman is 2-0-0 with a .947 save percentage through his two starts; Ullmark stopped 27 of 29 shots in Ottawa’s opener.

Top Five Senators and Bruins Fantasy Scorers from 2025-26
Last season’s scoring leaders give us a much better production baseline than one or three games in October. One important warning: Brady Tkachuk appears in Ottawa’s historical top five but was traded to Florida in June, while Viktor Arvidsson left Boston and signed with Detroit. They belong in this historical index because they produced those points for their former clubs; they are not fantasy options in tonight’s game.

Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Sanderson is the biggest Ottawa situation to monitor. He left Saturday’s win after reaggravating an undisclosed injury, and coach Travis Green said afterward that he was concerned but hoped Sanderson had removed himself before making the problem significantly worse. His status for Boston had not been confirmed when this article was prepared.
If Sanderson sits, Chabot is the clearest fantasy beneficiary because Ottawa will have to redistribute major even-strength and special-teams minutes. Jordan Spence and Carter Yakemchuk could also see expanded puck-moving responsibility, although Ottawa had not confirmed its replacement configuration.
Artem Zub has been dealing with a knee injury, while Andre Burakovsky was unavailable for the opener with an upper-body issue. Ridly Greig is not injured: he is serving the second game of a two-game suspension tonight.
Boston is missing McAvoy for the fourth game of his six-game suspension. That removes a 61-point defenseman from the lineup and, for fantasy purposes, opens offensive-zone touches for Boston’s remaining defensemen. Matthew Poitras is also on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
My fantasy takeaway is simple: Chabot’s potential role increase is more actionable than guessing which depth player replaces an injured or suspended skater.
Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins Salary-Cap Snapshot
Salary cap space does not predict tonight’s score, but it can shape waivers, call-ups and future roster opportunity. We currently project Ottawa with about $3.52 million in cap space and Boston with about $6.05 million against the NHL’s $104 million ceiling.
Boston currently has more breathing room, which may make future roster adjustments easier, but I would not use that as evidence for tonight’s outcome.
Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: Ottawa Senators 3 – Boston Bruins 2
I am giving Ottawa a narrow edge, but this is closer than last season’s head-to-head record suggests.
The Senators showed in Toronto that they can survive stretches without controlling the scoreboard, and Ullmark gave them the type of goaltending that can keep skilled forwards in a one-goal game. Boston has home ice and Swayman is the expected starter, so I do not expect another lopsided Senators-Bruins result like some of the meetings last season.
My biggest concern with Boston is special teams. A 0-for-6 power play and 57.1-percent penalty kill through three games are tiny samples, but they are also areas Ottawa can target. The Senators’ power play has not scored either, yet its 24.0-percent performance last season gives me more confidence that Stützle and Batherson can eventually convert an opportunity.
The Sanderson situation keeps me from projecting Ottawa too aggressively. If he does not play, the Senators lose one of their best transition defenders and their most productive defenseman from last season. Boston, however, faces the same type of problem with McAvoy unavailable.
From a fantasy standpoint, I give Ottawa a slight edge in concentrated opportunity. Stützle, Batherson and Chabot should touch the puck in virtually every important offensive situation. Boston has more uncertainty because Peterka, Hagens, Minten and its altered defense corps are still settling into new roles.
What I’m watching: the development that matters more to me than the final score is Ottawa’s power-play quarterback situation. If Sanderson is unavailable and Chabot absorbs the premium minutes, that could raise Chabot’s fantasy value beyond this single game. On Boston’s side, I want to see whether Hagens receives more meaningful PP deployment after showing that he can carry the puck through the neutral zone and create entries.
