Steve Yzerman’s transition from general manager to a senior advisory role does not automatically erase Larkin’s trade request, but it changes the environment surrounding it. If the captain’s frustration was primarily connected to his relationship with Yzerman and the direction of the organization, Detroit’s next general manager could reopen a door that appeared to be closing.
My immediate takeaway is that the Red Wings should make repairing their relationship with Larkin the new GM’s first major assignment. Detroit has no obvious internal replacement for its first-line center, and trading him without receiving an established, NHL-ready center in return could set the organization back several seasons.
That does not mean Larkin is guaranteed to stay. He may have decided that after years of missing the playoffs, he needs a fresh opportunity regardless of who occupies the general manager’s office. However, Detroit would be making a major mistake by moving directly into trade negotiations without first exploring whether a leadership reset can convince its captain to recommit.
The Red Wings announced on July 15 that Yzerman was transitioning into an advisory position and that a search for a new head of hockey operations was underway. At publication, the organization had not officially announced his successor.
Why the Detroit Red Wings’ Next GM Should Prioritize Dylan Larkin
Larkin reportedly requested a trade after another season ended without playoff hockey in Detroit. His initial list of preferred destinations included the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights.
There has also been speculation connecting the Dallas Stars to Larkin. That portion of the story should be presented cautiously, however. A July 8 report stated that Larkin had not expanded his approved list beyond Minnesota, Florida and Vegas. Unless a newer report confirms Dallas, the Stars should be considered an unconfirmed possibility rather than an established destination.
That limited list creates a difficult negotiating position for Detroit. Larkin’s full no-movement protection gives him significant control over where he can be traded, while the Red Wings still need to receive fair value for their captain and best center.
Yzerman previously made it clear that Detroit would only complete a trade that served the organization’s interests. A new GM could maintain that position while taking a more collaborative approach with Larkin and his representatives.
The most important first conversation should not be about potential trade packages. It should be about what Larkin needs to see from the organization.
Does he want a more aggressive roster-building plan? Does he need assurances that Detroit will prioritize immediate NHL talent rather than another patient rebuilding cycle? Was the trade request largely driven by his strained relationship with Yzerman, or has Larkin simply lost faith in the entire organization?
The answers to those questions will determine whether reconciliation is realistic.
Why Dylan Larkin’s $8.7 Million Contract Is So Valuable
Larkin is signed through the 2030-31 season with an annual cap hit of $8.7 million. With the NHL’s 2026-27 salary-cap ceiling set at $104 million, his contract occupies approximately 8.4 percent of Detroit’s available cap space. That is strong value for a proven first-line center who consistently produces around the 30-goal mark.

That produces an overall trade-value score of approximately 7.6 out of 10, with Detroit’s reduced negotiating leverage being the only major weakness.
From my perspective, the Red Wings should not trade Larkin for a package built mainly around draft picks and prospects. Detroit has already spent too much time waiting for its rebuild to produce results. Any acceptable offer should include an NHL-ready top-six center or a young player with a realistic path to becoming one.
Otherwise, keeping Larkin is the better hockey decision.
Could Dylan Larkin Return to the Red Wings Dressing Room?
Returning after a public trade request would undoubtedly create an uncomfortable opening to the season. Larkin could hear boos from frustrated Detroit fans, particularly during player introductions or his first few home games.
That reaction would likely fade quickly if he continued producing.
Hockey fans ultimately respond to effort and results. Larkin has spent his entire NHL career with the Red Wings, wears the captain’s “C” and has remained productive despite playing through a prolonged organizational rebuild. A strong start and a public commitment to helping Detroit reach the playoffs would go a long way toward repairing the relationship with the fan base.
The larger question is whether Larkin still believes the Red Wings can build a legitimate winner during the remaining prime years of his career.
A new GM cannot erase Detroit’s decade-long playoff drought, but that executive can present a more urgent plan. If the new leadership arrives with a credible strategy, involves Larkin in the conversation and demonstrates a willingness to improve the roster immediately, staying in Detroit could once again become appealing.
My prediction is that Larkin will wait until the new head of hockey operations is appointed before making a final decision. If the trade request was primarily about Yzerman, there is a realistic path toward reconciliation. If it was about Detroit’s overall inability to become a contender, a new GM alone may not be enough.
Either way, the next general manager’s first major decision could define the direction of the Detroit Red Wings for years.
