The NHL news cycle on Sunday, August 30 is producing several intriguing stories as training camps move closer, and one of the most interesting continues to involve Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin.
Fresh discussion has connected Larkin to both the Montreal Canadiens and Utah Mammoth; Elias Pettersson is receiving a noticeably different message from Vancouver’s new leadership, the Ottawa Senators appear to be moving closer to choosing their next captain, and Chicago has taken care of business with young defenseman Kevin Korchinski.
There is an important distinction with the Larkin chatter: the trade request itself is real; Montreal and Utah are currently speculation. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman publicly confirmed in June that Larkin’s agent informed Detroit that the center wanted to be traded and provided a short list of teams for which he would waive his no-trade protection. Montreal was not among the three initially reported destinations of Florida, Minnesota and Vegas.

Dylan Larkin Trade Rumors Put Canadiens and Mammoth in Focus
Montreal has become the most interesting new name around Larkin.
NHL Network analyst Mike Johnson recently made the case that Montreal’s young roster and deep prospect pool could make the Canadiens an excellent hockey fit for Larkin. Today’s coverage has pushed that discussion further, although there is still no indication Larkin has agreed to waive his no-trade clause for Montreal. Utah has also been floated because of its improved roster, young core and collection of trade assets.
That distinction matters.
Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31, and PuckPedia lists full no-trade protection for the current season. He is coming off a 34-goal, 67-point season in 74 games. Detroit therefore has little reason to treat this like a salary dump. Any team trying to acquire him should expect to pay for a legitimate first-line-caliber center under contract for five more seasons.
My read: Montreal makes far more sense financially than many blockbuster destinations being floated. The Canadiens currently project to have approximately $9.78 million in cap space. Simply adding Larkin’s $8.7 million hit would theoretically leave about $1.08 million, before accounting for the actual players involved in a trade, roster changes, bonuses or retained salary. Utah projects at roughly $4.58 million, meaning the Mammoth would need to clear approximately $4.12 million if Larkin were added without salary going back to Detroit.

Elias Pettersson Is Getting a Different Message in Vancouver
The Vancouver Canucks may also be changing direction with Elias Pettersson.
Instead of publicly challenging the star center after two disappointing seasons, new general manager Ryan Johnson is emphasizing support. Johnson told NHL.com that he wants to give Pettersson “an environment that supports him” as Vancouver attempts to get the 27-year-old back toward the player who scored 102 points in 2022-23. Pettersson has totaled 30 goals and 96 points over the past two seasons combined.
That doesn’t guarantee Vancouver will never entertain trade calls. It does, however, weaken the idea that management is desperate to move him before camp.
My read: Pettersson’s trade value is almost certainly higher if Vancouver first rebuilds his confidence and production. Moving an $11.6-million player at his lowest perceived value rarely produces the kind of return a rebuilding organization wants. Vancouver has every incentive to see whether a new environment can restore the elite offensive player that existed only a few seasons ago.
Senators Captain Watch Is Getting More Interesting
Ottawa is also entering a fascinating leadership transition after trading Brady Tkachuk to Florida.
Recent reporting indicates president of hockey operations Steve Staios and coach Travis Green are moving closer to deciding who will wear the “C.” Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson and Tim Stutzle have been among the prominent names discussed. NHL.com’s recent Senators preview also identified Chabot and Claude Giroux as players expected to assume more leadership responsibility.
As of Sunday afternoon, however, Ottawa’s official news feed has not announced a new captain, so any claim that a decision has already been finalized would be premature.
Chabot would be particularly intriguing. He was the runner-up when Ottawa selected Tkachuk as captain in 2021 and has remained with the organization through some difficult seasons.
Blackhawks Lock Up Kevin Korchinski
One firm contract development came from Chicago.
The Blackhawks signed 22-year-old defenseman Kevin Korchinski to a two-year contract carrying a $1.325 million cap hit. Korchinski appeared in 13 NHL games last season and recorded 26 points in 53 AHL games with Rockford. Chicago’s decision gives the former seventh-overall pick additional development runway without making a major long-term commitment.
For a rebuilding club trying to transition more young talent into NHL roles, that is a sensible bridge contract.
Vegas Faces a Different Kind of Pressure After Its Cup Final Run
Today’s official NHL.com coverage also turns toward the Vegas Golden Knights.
Vegas enters 2026-27 after reaching another Stanley Cup Final but losing Pavel Dorofeyev, who led the team with 37 regular-season goals before being traded to the Rangers. New head coach Ryan Craig now inherits a veteran roster expected to remain firmly in championship contention.
NHL EDGE data reinforces why expectations remain high: Vegas allowed the fewest high-danger shots on goal last season while producing the league’s best high-danger shot differential at plus-196.
The biggest questions are therefore less about whether Vegas is good and more about whether Craig can preserve its identity, who replaces Dorofeyev’s scoring, and whether the goaltending holds up.
