The fantasy hockey appeal of Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets on October 7, 2026 starts with elite players trending upward around one major roster storyline. Nathan MacKinnon already has five points in two games for Colorado, while Artturi Lehkonen has three goals and Martin Necas has four points. Winnipeg counters with Kyle Connor and Cole Perfetti at five points apiece through three games, and the Jets’ power play has opened at 50 percent.
The biggest variable is in goal. Connor Hellebuyck remains suspended after failing to report to training camp following his trade request, leaving Winnipeg to lean on Stuart Skinner and Clay Stevenson. Neither starting goalie had been officially confirmed at the time of writing. That matters because Colorado has scored 14 goals in two games.
What I’m watching most is whether Winnipeg can use its power play to slow Colorado’s momentum. If the Jets can force penalties and keep Connor, Perfetti and their top unit involved, this matchup can produce fantasy value on both sides. If not, Colorado’s top line has the stronger five-on-five ceiling.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, 6:30 p.m. CT and 5:30 p.m. MT at Canada Life Centre. In Canada, this is an exclusive Prime Video Wednesday Night Hockey game. In the United States, Altitude carries the Avalanche regional broadcast, while NHL Power Play on the ESPN App is the out-of-market streaming route subject to territorial restrictions. Winnipeg radio is on 680 CJOB and Power 97; Colorado’s call is on Altitude Sports Radio 92.5 FM and its app.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
Colorado enters 2-0-0 with 14 goals scored and five allowed: 7.00 goals per game and 2.50 goals against. The Avalanche power play is 4-for-9 at 44.4 percent, and their penalty kill is 6-for-6.
Winnipeg is 2-0-1 with nine goals scored and eight allowed, or 3.00 goals per game and 2.67 against. The Jets are 4-for-8 on the power play, a 50 percent rate, while killing 88.9 percent of opposing opportunities.
Those special-teams numbers come from tiny samples, so I would not project either team to stay near those percentages. Still, they show where the early fantasy leverage has been. All three of Connor’s goals have come on the power play, while Colorado has already shown it can score from several lines.
The recent head-to-head history is a useful counterweight. Colorado and Winnipeg split four games last season. Colorado won 3-2 on December 19 and 3-2 on March 26; Winnipeg won 3-1 on March 14 and 4-2 on March 28. Every meeting finished with six total goals or fewer. That does not guarantee another tight game, but it is a reason not to assume Colorado’s current scoring pace carries over unchanged.
Colorado has also been idle since Saturday, while Winnipeg played Monday in Pittsburgh. I give the Avalanche a small preparation edge.
NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets
MacKinnon is the obvious starting point. He has two goals, three assists and 12 shots through two games, and Colorado’s current top line with Lehkonen and Necas has been dangerous immediately. That trio combined for eight points in the 6-1 win over St. Louis. For fantasy managers, MacKinnon’s shot volume, elite five-on-five role and power-play access give him the highest ceiling in this matchup.
Necas has two goals and two assists, and his placement beside MacKinnon makes his five-on-five role especially valuable. Cale Makar has three points through two games and remains the premium Colorado defense option. Current projected deployment has MacKinnon, Necas and Makar together on the top power-play group.
Winnipeg’s strongest early fantasy story is Connor. He has three goals, two assists and 20 shots in three games. Perfetti also has five points, and his first-line usage plus top-unit power-play role makes him one of the most interesting risers in this matchup.
Scheifele has not yet produced a point through three games, but I would not overreact. He led Winnipeg with 103 points last season and remains between Connor and Perfetti at even strength with a premium power-play role.
In goal, fantasy managers should wait for confirmation. Blackwood is 2-0-0 with a .912 save percentage, Skinner is 1-0-1 at .909, and Stevenson won his Jets debut after stopping 29 of 31 shots in Pittsburgh. Colorado also plays Thursday in Calgary, making its goalie split especially important.

Top Five Colorado Avalanche and Winnipeg Jets Fantasy Scorers from 2025-26
Because the 2026-27 season is only a few games old, the better full-season baseline is 2025-26. Colorado was led by MacKinnon’s 127 points, followed by Necas at 100, Makar at 79, Brock Nelson at 65 and Valeri Nichushkin at 49. Winnipeg’s top five were Scheifele with 103, Connor with 92, Gabriel Vilardi with 69, Josh Morrissey with 55 and Perfetti with 32.
Colorado Avalanche — 2025-26
Winnipeg Jets — 2025-26
Colorado entered this season with three players who cleared 79 points last year and already has those same stars driving the attack. Winnipeg’s offense was more top-heavy, which increases the fantasy importance of the Connor-Scheifele-Perfetti line and Morrissey’s power-play involvement.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Colorado lists Logan O’Connor and Zachary L’Heureux with lower-body injuries. O’Connor’s absence removes a useful middle-six option and can concentrate more offensive opportunities among the established top nine.
Winnipeg’s most important absence is not an injury. Hellebuyck was suspended after failing to report to training camp following a trade request. That pushes Skinner and Stevenson into meaningful NHL starts and increases the fantasy risk of Winnipeg’s crease against an elite offense.
For skaters, the bigger effect is opportunity concentration. Connor and Perfetti are carrying heavy offensive roles, and Morrissey remains central to PP1. If Winnipeg falls behind, those players could see even more offensive-zone deployment.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets Salary-Cap Snapshot
We list Colorado with a projected cap hit of $103.85 million against the $104 million ceiling, leaving about $149,000 in projected space. Winnipeg is at a projected $91.11 million cap hit with roughly $12.89 million in projected space.
That does not predict tonight’s result, but it matters to the season-long fantasy picture. Colorado has little room for recalls or additions without another move. Winnipeg has far more flexibility to react to injuries, waivers or a potential Hellebuyck transaction.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: Colorado Avalanche 5 – Winnipeg Jets 3
I’m taking Colorado because the Avalanche have the stronger top-end offense, deeper proven scoring and cleaner early defensive profile. Fourteen goals in two games is not sustainable, but the fantasy appeal is broader than one shooting heater: MacKinnon, Necas, Lehkonen and Makar are all contributing.
Winnipeg can make this close through special teams. Its power play is 4-for-8, Connor is shooting frequently, and Perfetti looks comfortable in an elevated role. If Colorado takes multiple penalties, I can see Winnipeg creating a higher-scoring game than last season’s series produced.
The goaltending uncertainty is why I stop short of calling this a mismatch. Colorado has a back-to-back, while Winnipeg’s tandem is absorbing the workload created by Hellebuyck’s suspension. I still prefer Colorado’s skaters for fantasy purposes, especially MacKinnon, Necas and Makar.
More important to fantasy managers than the final score is deployment. I want to see whether Winnipeg keeps Connor, Scheifele and Perfetti together, whether Perfetti stays on PP1, and how Colorado distributes power-play time. Those roles will tell us more about sustainable fantasy value than one October box score.
