The Toronto Maple Leafs appeared to have the Vegas Golden Knights beaten before Thursday’s game was even nine minutes old. Instead, they walked away with one of the most frustrating losses of their young season. Toronto raced to a 3–0 lead, only to watch Jack Eichel and the Golden Knights storm back for a 4–3 shootout victory. Rookie Trevor Connelly delivered the deciding goal, leaving the Maple Leafs with serious questions about their ability to protect leads.
The bigger concern? Vegas outshot Toronto 43–24, forcing Sergei Bobrovsky to make 40 saves just to secure a single point. A three-goal advantage should be enough to control a hockey game, but the Maple Leafs spent far too much time defending rather than dictating play.
Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens surrendered a 2–0 lead in a 5–2 loss to Nashville, the Carolina Hurricanes embarrassed Vancouver 7–2 behind Logan Stankoven’s first NHL hat trick, and the trade market remains focused on Dylan Larkin, Connor Hellebuyck and Simon Edvinsson.
These aren’t necessarily signs of panic across the NHL. But they are early warning signals that could influence decisions in several front offices.

Toronto Maple Leafs News: A Three-Goal Lead That Exposed a Bigger Problem
What makes Toronto’s loss particularly concerning is how dramatically the game changed after the opening nine minutes.
Jack Roslovic, Easton Cowan and Nick Paul scored to build the early advantage. Vegas responded through Mark Stone, Brett Howden and a Jack Eichel penalty shot before Connelly eventually ended the contest in the shootout.
Toronto showed earlier this week that it could erase a three-goal deficit against Nashville. Now it has experienced the opposite side of that story.
My take: Toronto’s offensive potential isn’t the immediate concern. It’s whether this group can consistently manage the game after establishing a lead. Auston Matthews, Gavin McKenna and Kirill Marchenko provide impressive offensive options, but the Leafs need to spend less time defending waves of pressure.
Vegas deserves enormous credit for its resilience. However, allowing 43 shots while protecting a three-goal lead isn’t a sustainable formula for Toronto.
Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars Make Early Statements
The Carolina Hurricanes delivered one of Thursday’s most impressive performances, dismantling the Vancouver Canucks 7–2.
Logan Stankoven recorded a hat trick that included an even-strength goal, a power-play goal and a short-handed goal. Andrei Svechnikov added two power-play goals, while Sean Walker collected four assists.
For Vancouver, Jake DeBrusk supplied both goals, but the defensive breakdowns were impossible to ignore.
Boston also sent a message with a 6–1 victory against Utah. David Pastrnak recorded two goals and two assists, while Jeremy Swayman stopped 36 shots.
Dallas continued its turnaround with a 4–0 victory against Buffalo. Mikko Rantanen produced four points, and Jake Oettinger registered his second consecutive shutout.
My observation: Carolina and Dallas deserve attention for different reasons. The Hurricanes are showing how dangerous their pressure-based offense can become, while Oettinger’s consecutive shutouts provide Dallas with exactly the defensive foundation it needs.
The Colorado Avalanche also looked dangerous in their 7–3 victory against Calgary, with Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon each collecting three points.
NHL Trade Rumors: Larkin, Hellebuyck and Edvinsson Face Different Obstacles
The NHL trade rumor market remains active, but there is an important distinction between reported player situations and a completed trade being imminent.
In an October 9 analysis, Bleacher Report’s Lyle Richardson examined the situations surrounding Dylan Larkin, Connor Hellebuyck, Simon Edvinsson and Elias Pettersson.
Dylan Larkin Trade Rumors: Does Florida Still Need a Blockbuster?
Florida has been connected to speculation involving Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin, particularly after Aleksander Barkov suffered another injury.
However, the situation has changed.
The Panthers now expect Barkov to miss approximately six to eight weeks, rather than the longer recovery initially discussed. Barkov also expressed optimism about returning as quickly as possible.
That’s significant because acquiring Larkin would represent a major long-term salary commitment for a team facing a potentially temporary need at center.
My take: The Panthers might explore smaller additions to protect their center depth, but spending premium assets on Larkin becomes harder to justify if Barkov remains on schedule to return. Florida also has to manage Brad Marchand’s reported week-to-week absence.
The Larkin-to-Florida possibility hasn’t produced a confirmed trade, and the updated Barkov timeline makes an immediate blockbuster appear less compelling.
Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors: Edmonton Still Has a Difficult Decision
Connor Hellebuyck remains one of the NHL’s biggest unresolved trade situations after publicly requesting a move from Winnipeg and subsequently being suspended for failing to report to training camp.
Edmonton has surfaced as a speculative destination, but several obstacles remain.
Hellebuyck’s reported preference for an American destination is one issue. Edmonton’s salary-cap flexibility and Winnipeg’s expectations in a trade are others.
The Oilers also just defeated Anaheim 5–2, with Leon Draisaitl collecting four assists and Connor McDavid recording three points.
My take: Edmonton has every reason to evaluate its goaltending, but a blockbuster involving Hellebuyck would require much more than identifying an obvious need. Contract flexibility, available trade assets and the player’s willingness to accept the destination would all have to align.
Simon Edvinsson Trade Rumors: Could San Jose Make a Serious Push?
Detroit’s unsigned defenseman Simon Edvinsson continues to generate speculation after Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the player would prefer a trade.
Detroit’s stated priority has been retaining Edvinsson, but the prolonged contract situation creates uncertainty.
San Jose has been identified as a potentially logical destination in trade analysis because of its long-term need for high-end defensive talent.
That doesn’t mean a Sharks trade is imminent. There is no confirmed agreement between the clubs.
My take: Edvinsson is the player among these rumored targets I’d watch most closely for a meaningful change in negotiations. Detroit cannot afford to lose control of another important part of its future without receiving substantial value in return.
The Sharks would need to be prepared to pay a significant acquisition price and negotiate a major contract.
Latest NHL Injury News: Canadiens, Panthers and Sharks
Montreal’s loss to Nashville wasn’t its only concern.
Goaltender Sam Montembeault suffered an undisclosed injury in practice, prompting Jacob Fowler to make his first start of the season. Fowler finished with 15 saves on 18 shots as Nashville rallied from a 2–0 deficit.
Ryan O’Reilly scored the go-ahead power-play goal late in the third period before Adam Edstrom added two empty-net goals.
Elsewhere, Macklin Celebrini missed his second consecutive game because of a lower-body injury, although San Jose still defeated St. Louis 3–2 in overtime on a Darnell Nurse goal.
Seattle defenseman Ryan Lindgren is expected to miss four to six weeks, while Detroit placed J.T. Compher on injured reserve.
These developments are important to monitor because injuries can create legitimate trade-market needs. But a roster problem doesn’t automatically mean a team is preparing a blockbuster.
What NHL Fans Should Watch Next
Washington enters Friday with an emotional storyline as Alex Ovechkin plays his final NHL season. The Capitals are trying to turn that moment into another serious Stanley Cup run.
The Maple Leafs need a defensive response after their Vegas collapse, Montreal needs clarity in goal, and Vancouver must find a way to recover after Carolina exposed its defensive problems.
From a trade perspective, the situations involving Larkin, Hellebuyck and Edvinsson remain worth following. The challenge is separating actual developments from hypothetical destinations.
My biggest takeaway from October 9: Early-season games don’t determine the Stanley Cup, but they can expose weaknesses that eventually lead to roster changes. The teams that identify those weaknesses first will have an advantage.
