The New York Rangers have a decision coming that could reshape the NHL trade market, Connor Bedard is finally returning to the Chicago Blackhawks lineup, and the Buffalo Sabres are suddenly facing another significant injury concern involving captain Rasmus Dahlin.
And all of this is happening on a Tuesday when every NHL team is scheduled to play.
The biggest development remains Igor Shesterkin’s season-ending lower-body injury. New York has already demonstrated that it can win without its franchise goaltender, but surviving one game and protecting an entire season are two very different challenges.
Meanwhile, Bedard’s expected return against Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins gives Chicago a desperately needed offensive boost. Buffalo must prepare to face Montreal without Dahlin, while Carolina and Dallas are dealing with injuries that could eventually influence their roster decisions.
Here is everything hockey fans need to know about the latest NHL news and NHL rumors and NHL scores, including Monday’s results, today’s injury updates, emerging trade possibilities and the storylines worth watching next.
NHL News and NHL Rumors: Biggest Stories for October 13, 2026
Rangers Face a Goaltending Decision After Igor Shesterkin’s Season-Ending Injury
The Rangers entered this season believing that elite goaltending would remain one of their greatest competitive advantages. That assumption has changed dramatically.
Shesterkin is out for the remainder of the 2026-27 season after suffering a lower-body injury against Washington on October 9.
The situation becomes even more complicated because backup Joonas Korpisalo is also injured, leaving Dylan Garand with an unexpectedly important opportunity.
Garand responded by making 19 saves in New York’s 6-2 victory over Vancouver on Sunday. Tye Kartye and Will Cuylle each scored twice, giving the Rangers a convincing win in their first full game without Shesterkin.
That performance matters, but I would caution against making Garand’s long-term projection from a single October result.
There is a considerable difference between providing energetic relief during an injury crisis and handling the nightly responsibilities of an NHL starter.
ESPN’s Emily Kaplan has been linked to reporting that New York could explore the goaltending trade market. Former Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick, now working in player development, has also surfaced as a possible emergency solution.
However, speculation about potential replacements should not be confused with a confirmed trade negotiation.
My take: The Rangers should give Garand meaningful starts while simultaneously evaluating external options. An immediate blockbuster could create unnecessary salary-cap and asset-management problems.
Rangers Goaltending Trade Options: What Does the Salary Cap Allow?
One of the most interesting questions is whether New York should pursue temporary insurance or invest in another established starter.
Shesterkin’s 2026-27 cap hit is approximately $11.57 million. The NHL’s league-wide salary-cap ceiling is $104 million.
New York may receive spending flexibility through injury-related cap provisions, but that does not mean the entire Shesterkin cap hit automatically becomes available for another acquisition.
Colorado Avalanche goaltenders Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood have both entered outside discussions about potential Rangers options.
Wedgewood carries a $2.5 million cap hit on an expiring contract, while Blackwood carries $5.25 million annually through 2029-30.
Neither player should be described as available without confirmation from the teams involved.
From my perspective, a short-term veteran makes more sense than taking on another expensive multiyear commitment before Garand has been properly evaluated.
Goaltending Salary-Cap Comparison
2026–27 NHL salary-cap ceiling: $104 million
11.12% of NHL cap | Current Rangers goaltender
5.05% of NHL cap | Colorado | Speculative option
2.40% of NHL cap | Colorado | Speculative option
Model methodology: Bars compare the three annual cap hits relative to Shesterkin’s contract, not available Rangers cap room. The comparison does not imply any trade is underway. Actual acquisition space depends on LTIR treatment, roster moves and league rules. Contract data: PuckPedia. League cap: NHL/NHLPA.
My original trade-value model also favours patience. It evaluates the relative benefits of staying with Garand, acquiring a rental goalie or pursuing a more expensive established starter.
The model is an editorial decision-making tool, not an insider report or an NHL team’s internal valuation.
Rangers Goalie Trade Value Index
Preserves trade assets and cap flexibility while evaluating New York’s internal option.
Could provide experienced short-term support without another long-term starter commitment.
May improve experience in net but introduces additional asset, cap and contract risk.
How it works: Editorial scores weight expected reliability (30 points), asset acquisition cost (25), salary-cap flexibility (25), and near-term readiness (20). These are subjective strategy assessments, not statistical win probabilities, confirmed trade offers or scouting grades.
Connor Bedard Returns as Blackhawks Search for an Offensive Spark
Chicago finally has some encouraging news.
Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill indicated following Tuesday’s morning skate that Bedard would be included in the lineup against Pittsburgh, barring an unexpected setback.
Bedard underwent left shoulder surgery after an offseason training injury and has worked toward returning ahead of the original expectations.
He is expected to center a line featuring Patrick Kane and Roman Kantserov.
That combination is fascinating because Kane brings veteran creativity, while Bedard provides the shot and offensive instincts Chicago has desperately missed.
Chicago entered the matchup with a 1-5-0 record, and its power play had converted only once in 14 opportunities.
The Blackhawks need more than a recognizable name returning. They need somebody capable of controlling possessions, generating dangerous scoring chances and forcing opponents to adjust their defensive coverage.
Bedard produced 75 points in 69 games last season. His return creates immediate fantasy hockey implications, especially for Kane and Chicago’s top power-play unit.
My biggest question is whether Bedard can immediately handle the physical demands of playing heavy minutes after shoulder surgery.
The offensive talent has never been in doubt. His workload and timing will be worth monitoring.
Rasmus Dahlin Injury Creates Trouble Before Buffalo’s Montreal Showdown
Buffalo defeated Florida 5-3 on Monday, but the celebration came with a potentially costly development.
Dahlin left the game with an upper-body injury after attempting a slap shot during the second period.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff subsequently described the injury as day to day. Dahlin did not travel with the team to Montreal and is not expected to face the Canadiens on Tuesday.
That is an important development considering Buffalo and Montreal met in an intense seven-game playoff series last spring.
Dahlin has recorded four points through six games this season and is averaging more than 23 minutes per game.
Without him, Buffalo must redistribute power-play responsibilities and difficult defensive-zone assignments.
Montreal has its own injury problem. Mike Matheson is day to day with a lower-body issue and will also miss Tuesday’s game. Jacob Fowler is scheduled to start in goal, while Owen Beck is set to make his season debut.
This matchup could become a battle of defensive depth rather than simply a contest between two emerging Atlantic Division rivals.
Carolina Hurricanes Lose Jordan Staal for at Least a Month
Carolina received difficult news Tuesday when coach Rod Brind’Amour confirmed that captain Jordan Staal could miss one to two months because of a calf tear.
Staal suffered the injury during warmups before Sunday’s 4-1 victory over Philadelphia.
Although Staal has not recorded a point in six games this season, judging his importance through offensive production alone would be a mistake.
He handles difficult matchups, face-offs and penalty-killing responsibilities. His absence creates an opening that opponents may attempt to exploit.
Carolina has started 5-1-1, but maintaining that pace without a trusted defensive center becomes more challenging.
I would not automatically expect a trade. However, if the Hurricanes struggle to replace his defensive assignments internally, acquiring additional center depth could become a more serious consideration.
Dallas Stars Face a Three-Month Absence for Matt Duchene
Dallas has confirmed that Matt Duchene underwent surgery for a core injury and is expected to miss approximately three months.
Duchene recorded 45 points in 57 regular-season games last year.
His absence matters because the Stars entered this week’s schedule averaging only 2.20 goals per game, with a power play operating at 7.7 percent.
Those are concerning early offensive numbers for a team with Stanley Cup expectations.
Dallas does not necessarily need to rush into a trade, but its management must determine whether internal adjustments can stabilize the offence.
In my view, the Stars should first evaluate whether their remaining forwards can generate more high-danger chances. If the scoring problems continue, the conversation about outside reinforcements will become much more interesting.

NHL Frozen Frenzy: All 32 Teams Play Tuesday
Tuesday’s schedule features 16 NHL games and every team in action.
That creates several compelling storylines beyond the immediate injury news.
Detroit hosts New Jersey in a matchup featuring Dylan Larkin and Jack Hughes. Montreal welcomes Buffalo in a rematch of last spring’s heated playoff series.
Chicago faces Pittsburgh with Bedard expected to return, while Connor McDavid is scheduled to play his 800th regular-season NHL game for Edmonton.
Washington visits Carolina in what is expected to be Alex Ovechkin’s final regular-season appearance at the Hurricanes’ home arena.
Two players in particular are worth following in Columbus’ matchup with Florida.
Matthew Knies, acquired from Toronto in September, has produced four points in his first four games with Columbus. Brady Tkachuk, now playing alongside his brother Matthew in Florida, is still searching for his first goal with the Panthers.
Those are the kinds of early-season developments that can quickly change expectations for two franchises.
NHL Player Trends: Matthews, Ullmark and Hughes Are Making Early Statements
Auston Matthews was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week after collecting nine points in three games for Toronto.
Jake Oettinger and Alexis Lafrenière earned the other two weekly honours.
For fantasy managers, Matthews’ production is encouraging, but Ottawa’s goaltending deserves equally serious attention.
Ullmark’s five victories and six goals allowed suggest the Senators are doing an excellent job limiting damage in front of their starter.
Meanwhile, Quinn Hughes’ six-game point streak gives Minnesota another major weapon in transition and on the power play.
My observation: Early-season point totals become much more meaningful when they are supported by stable deployment, strong linemates and consistent special-teams opportunities. Those are the indicators I would prioritize over isolated multi-point games.
What the Latest NHL Trade Rumors Actually Tell Us
There is an important distinction between a team facing a roster problem and a team actively negotiating a trade.
The Rangers have a confirmed goaltending problem. The names being discussed as replacements remain speculative.
Carolina has a confirmed absence at center. That does not prove the Hurricanes are shopping for a replacement.
Dallas has a confirmed offensive injury and disappointing early scoring numbers. That does not establish that a forward trade is imminent.
This distinction matters for fans who want credible NHL trade rumors rather than invented blockbuster scenarios.
For New York, the next few starts by Garand could determine how aggressively management pursues goaltending help.
For Carolina and Dallas, internal depth and the duration of each injury will influence the next decision.
These situations deserve continued attention, but there is no confirmed trade agreement involving the players discussed here.
Final Thoughts: Which NHL Story Matters Most?
If I had to identify one development with the greatest long-term impact, it would be Shesterkin’s injury.
A team can often replace a middle-six forward or adjust its defensive pairings. Replacing the nightly influence of a franchise goaltender is significantly more difficult.
Bedard’s return might transform Chicago’s offensive confidence. Dahlin’s absence could complicate Buffalo’s attempt to build momentum. Carolina and Dallas now face important tests of their depth.
But the Rangers’ next move could directly influence the NHL trade market.
The most interesting question isn’t simply which goaltender New York could acquire.
It’s how much the Rangers should be willing to sacrifice to protect a season that has barely begun.
