The Dylan Larkin trade rumors have taken another intriguing turn, and this time, the Detroit Red Wings are giving fans a legitimate reason to pay attention to the Minnesota Wild.
Detroit has sent two senior hockey executives to watch Minnesota play in a matter of days. Assistant general manager Kris Draper attended Tuesday’s Wild game in Buffalo, while interim general manager Shawn Horcoff was in attendance for Thursday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
That’s an unusual amount of executive attention for one potential trade partner, especially with Minnesota already linked to Larkin following his offseason trade request.
Adding to the speculation, NHL insider Frank Seravalli discussed a hypothetical Larkin trade package involving the Wild on Friday, October 9.
Does this mean a blockbuster trade is coming? Not necessarily. But the latest developments suggest Minnesota deserves serious attention in the ongoing Dylan Larkin trade conversation.
And there’s one particularly interesting prospect connection that might help explain what Detroit could be evaluating.
Why the Detroit Red Wings Are Scouting the Minnesota Wild
According to Detroit Red Wings reporter Ansar Khan of MLive, the organization’s senior hockey executives have attended consecutive Minnesota Wild games.
Draper watched Minnesota face the Buffalo Sabres on October 6. Two nights later, Horcoff attended Minnesota’s game against Tampa Bay.
NHL teams scout opponents constantly, so the presence of a front-office executive isn’t automatically evidence of trade negotiations.
However, having two of Detroit’s most influential hockey decision-makers attend consecutive games involving the same organization certainly raises questions.
My interpretation is that the Red Wings could be taking a closer look at Minnesota’s NHL-ready talent, evaluating potential trade targets, or simply gathering updated information ahead of future discussions.
It’s also possible these trips relate to other roster evaluations.
The important distinction is that Detroit’s scouting activity is reported, while the purpose of those trips remains unconfirmed.
That said, considering everything surrounding Larkin’s future, it’s difficult to completely dismiss the timing.
Dylan Larkin’s Trade Request Has Changed Detroit’s Plans
Larkin requested a trade following the 2025-26 NHL season, setting off months of speculation about his future with the franchise.
The 30-year-old center also lost the Detroit captaincy ahead of the new season, turning what had been a relatively stable leadership situation into a significant organizational storyline.
Minnesota, Florida and Vegas were identified in earlier reporting as destinations Larkin would consider approving under his no-trade clause.
The Wild have remained a logical landing spot because they need another established offensive center and have ambitions beyond simply qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In September, Horcoff publicly acknowledged ongoing communication with Larkin, explaining that Detroit would handle the situation one day at a time.
Nothing from those earlier discussions confirmed that a trade would happen.
Friday’s new scouting reports do not change that fact, but they provide a reason to revisit a possibility that has been discussed for months.
What Could Minnesota Actually Offer Detroit for Dylan Larkin?
Here’s where the conversation gets interesting.
Minnesota possesses several young assets capable of attracting Detroit’s attention, including Danila Yurov and Charlie Stramel.
According to Khan’s reporting, the Wild have reportedly preferred offering future assets, including draft picks and prospects such as Stramel.
Stramel, a former first-round selection, represents a potentially interesting development option for Detroit. His size and center projection offer long-term appeal, but he’s not an established replacement for what Larkin currently brings to the Red Wings.
Yurov is a different conversation.
The 22-year-old forward has more immediate offensive upside, and he scored against Buffalo on October 6 — the same game Draper reportedly attended.
That connection is worth highlighting, although there is no confirmation that Yurov was the specific player Detroit was scouting.
My view is that Yurov would be a significantly more attractive centerpiece than a futures-only package built around Stramel and draft picks.
Detroit needs young players who can eventually make a meaningful impact at the NHL level.
Trading Larkin for distant draft selections would create another hole down the middle of the lineup without providing an immediate answer.
The Red Wings shouldn’t confuse getting younger with actually getting better.
Minnesota, meanwhile, has legitimate reasons to protect its most promising young players. That difference in priorities may help explain why a trade hasn’t materialized.
Dylan Larkin’s Production Makes Him Extremely Difficult to Replace
It’s easy to overlook Larkin’s actual value when trade speculation dominates the conversation.
The former Red Wings captain scored 34 goals and registered 67 points in 74 games during the 2025-26 NHL season.
His previous two seasons were similarly productive:
- 2023-24: 33 goals and 69 points in 68 games.
- 2024-25: 30 goals and 70 points in 82 games.
- 2025-26: 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games.
That’s 97 goals and 206 points over 224 regular-season games, an average of approximately 0.92 points per game.
Those aren’t numbers Detroit can easily replace through free agency or with an unproven prospect.
Larkin also demonstrated his ability to contribute immediately after returning from an upper-body injury.
On October 6, he recorded a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators.
After hearing boos mixed with cheers throughout the evening, Larkin described it afterward as an interesting night.
For me, that performance reinforces why Detroit must maintain a substantial asking price.
His situation may be uncomfortable, but he’s still an effective top-six NHL center capable of producing more than 30 goals.
Can the Minnesota Wild Afford Dylan Larkin’s $8.7 Million Contract?
Can Minnesota Fit Dylan Larkin?

The salary cap could be an even bigger obstacle than the trade return.
Larkin carries an $8.7 million annual salary-cap hit through the 2030-31 NHL season.
Minnesota, meanwhile, has approximately $338,000 in projected cap space based on our figures.
That creates an immediate obstacle of approximately $8.36 million if the Wild attempt to acquire Larkin without moving existing salary or receiving retention.
Even trading Ryan Hartman’s $4 million cap hit and Yakov Trenin’s $3.5 million cap hit would leave Minnesota approximately $862,000 over the cap under a simplified full-season calculation.
A different combination of outgoing players, additional roster adjustments, or retained salary would be required.
Minnesota also placed Filip Gustavsson on long-term injured reserve on Friday, which introduces another cap-management consideration. However, the team’s available LTIR relief must be calculated under NHL rules rather than treating his entire contract as newly available permanent cap space.
This is why the financial side of a blockbuster is just as important as the names appearing in mock trade proposals.
The Wild might want Larkin. Fitting him into their lineup is another challenge entirely.
NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Analysis: What Would Make a Deal Work?
Dylan Larkin to Minnesota: Trade Fit Index
Detroit Red Wings × Minnesota Wild | October 9, 2026
Strong hockey fit. Difficult transaction.
Minnesota offers an attractive destination, but cap restrictions and Detroit’s expected return complicate a deal.
Methodology: NHLTradeRumor.com assigns editorial scores to five weighted categories, totaling 100 possible points. Scores are our subjective hockey assessments informed by public roster, contract and trade reporting. This is a trade-fit index, not a prediction of completion, reported offer or algorithmically estimated trade probability.
Looking at both rosters, I believe there are three major questions Detroit and Minnesota would need to resolve.
First, does Minnesota have a young player Detroit views as a legitimate future top-six contributor?
Second, would Detroit be willing to accept an established NHL contract to help Minnesota balance the salary cap?
Third, would retaining part of Larkin’s contract make financial sense for the Red Wings over several more seasons?
That final question matters enormously.
Retaining salary on a contract that extends through 2030-31 is a completely different decision from retaining money on an expiring deal at the trade deadline.
Detroit has room to negotiate, but shouldn’t sacrifice long-term flexibility simply to satisfy a trade request.
Is a Dylan Larkin Trade to Minnesota Getting Closer?
There’s enough information here to take the Minnesota Wild seriously as a potential destination.
Two senior Red Wings executives have watched Minnesota in consecutive games, national trade discussions have returned to Larkin, and the Wild still have an obvious reason to pursue additional offensive talent.
But here’s the part I wouldn’t overlook: Detroit can afford to wait for a better return.
The Red Wings already know Larkin can produce at a high level. Moving him without receiving meaningful young NHL talent would risk making an already complicated rebuild even more difficult.
For Minnesota, the incentive is equally clear. Adding Larkin alongside players such as Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy could give the Wild another significant offensive weapon.
My prediction is that the Red Wings will continue evaluating Minnesota’s available assets while maintaining a high asking price.
I wouldn’t call a deal imminent based on scouting trips alone.
However, if the Wild become willing to include a more valuable young player and solve the salary-cap puzzle, there’s a realistic path toward renewed negotiations.
The biggest development to watch next isn’t another scout appearing in the press box.
It’s whether Minnesota becomes willing to offer Detroit the kind of return that justifies trading Dylan Larkin.
Until then, these NHL trade rumors remain worth watching, but the reported scouting trips are a development — not proof of an impending blockbuster.
