The Edmonton Oilers may finally have given us enough clues to narrow down the identity of the mysterious young center they have reportedly been pursuing, and Boston Bruins forward Matt Poitras deserves serious consideration.
TSN insider Darren Dreger revealed that Edmonton has spent several weeks discussing a trade with an Eastern Conference team involving a young forward who could play center, has upside and still has plenty to prove at the NHL level. Dreger intentionally stopped short of identifying the player, describing him only as a potentially high-upside change-of-scenery candidate.
That description sounds an awful lot like Poitras.
The 22-year-old is a right-shot center, plays for an Eastern Conference team, carries an extremely manageable $850,000 cap hit and has already shown flashes of NHL-level offensive ability. Just as importantly, his place in Boston’s long-term lineup is no longer as obvious as it looked when he broke into the NHL as a teenager.
Does that prove the Edmonton Oilers are trying to acquire Matt Poitras? Absolutely not.
But when the clues are stacked together, this is one rumor worth examining.
Why Matt Poitras Fits the Edmonton Oilers’ Reported Trade Search
The strongest connection starts with something Edmonton has been searching for since the offseason: a right-shot center.
Elliotte Friedman specifically noted before the season that the Oilers did not have a right-shot center on their roster. In the same report, Friedman mentioned that other teams were curious about Boston’s plans for Poitras. Days later, Friedman reported that Edmonton had explored a “lateral trade” in which the Oilers could move one of their excess defencemen for a forward.
Now add Dreger’s description.
He characterized Edmonton’s target as a “young center potentially, with plenty of upside” who still has something to prove at the NHL level.
Poitras checks every one of those boxes.
He was Boston’s second-round pick, 54th overall, in the 2022 NHL Draft and made the Bruins directly out of junior hockey. His NHL career hasn’t developed in a straight line since then, but there is still enough offensive talent to make him interesting.
Poitras has 27 points in his first 70 NHL games. Last season with Providence, he produced 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points in 69 AHL games. Boston signed him to a one-year, two-way contract worth only $850,000 before this season, and he remains a restricted free agent after the deal expires.
Why Matt Poitras Fits Edmonton’s Search
Edmonton doesn’t need another expensive veteran. It needs players whose performance could significantly outperform their cap hits.
Poitras represents exactly that type of gamble.
Why the Boston Bruins Could Listen on a Matt Poitras Trade
Boston’s handling of Poitras is another reason this speculation is worth watching.
The Bruins initially designated him as injured non-roster following an injury suffered late in training camp. He was activated on October 5 and immediately inserted into the lineup against Ottawa, centering a fourth line with Tanner Jeannot and Mark Kastelic.
Poitras played 11:28 in Boston’s 4-1 loss. He didn’t record a point, finished plus-one, delivered two hits and won two of seven faceoffs. Boston’s lone goal actually developed on a James Hagens attempt to find Poitras around the net before the puck deflected in.
One game obviously doesn’t establish his value one way or another.
What is more significant is where he currently sits in Boston’s organizational picture.
The Bruins already have Elias Lindholm, Casey Mittelstadt, Morgan Geekie, Pavel Zacha, James Hagens, Fraser Minten and other players capable of playing through the middle. Poitras therefore isn’t walking into a situation where Boston absolutely needs him to become a top-six center immediately.
Boston also has financial flexibility. PuckPedia currently projects more than $6 million in Bruins cap space, meaning general manager Don Sweeney isn’t under financial pressure to move Poitras. If Boston trades him, it should be because the Bruins believe another asset better addresses their roster.
That distinction is important.
This wouldn’t be Edmonton rescuing Boston from a contract. It would have to be a hockey trade.
The Salary-Cap Math Makes a Poitras Trade Fascinating
Oilers–Poitras Salary Cap Calculator
2026-27 cap-hit comparison
Edmonton reduces annual cap hit by approximately $450,000.
Edmonton reduces annual cap hit by approximately $675,000.
This is where Poitras becomes especially attractive to Edmonton.
We list Edmonton with roughly $761,666 in current cap space, while Poitras carries an $850,000 cap hit. In isolation, adding Poitras would put Edmonton approximately $88,000 beyond that current-space figure, although the Oilers’ injuries, LTIR situation and daily cap calculations make the real mechanics more complicated.
But Friedman wasn’t reporting Edmonton was simply trying to add another player.
He reported the Oilers had investigated a defenceman-for-forward trade.
That changes everything.
Edmonton has Spencer Stastney at a $1.525 million cap hit and right-shot defenceman Ty Emberson at $1.3 million. If the Oilers hypothetically moved either player in a hockey trade involving Poitras, Edmonton would actually reduce its annual cap commitment.
An Emberson-for-Poitras framework would create approximately $450,000 in additional nominal cap-hit room for Edmonton.
A Stastney-for-Poitras framework would create approximately $675,000.
Those are my cap constructions, not reported trade offers, but they illustrate why a young player like Poitras makes considerably more sense for Edmonton than another established center earning $4 million or $5 million.
For a team already paying Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard superstar money, inexpensive upside has enormous value.
NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index: What Is Matt Poitras Worth?
NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index
My trade-value model puts Poitras at approximately 65/100.
That isn’t star-level trade value, but it is considerably higher than his NHL production alone would suggest.
Age is a major factor. So is contractual control. Poitras is only 22, costs $850,000 this season and remains an RFA afterward. Boston also isn’t dealing from a position where it has to dump him.
The risk is obvious: Poitras still hasn’t established himself as a full-time top-nine NHL center.
Seventy NHL games is enough to demonstrate talent, but not enough to prove what his eventual ceiling will be.
That’s exactly why I would be interested if I were running Edmonton.
The Oilers shouldn’t be attempting to acquire the player Poitras is today. They should be betting on what playing with better offensive talent could turn him into over the next two or three years.
Put Poitras in Edmonton’s lineup where Mike Babcock can shelter him initially, give him offensive-zone opportunities and occasionally expose him to Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, and suddenly there is a pathway to unlocking substantially more offense.
That’s the type of wager Edmonton should be making.
The Biggest Clue Might Be Edmonton’s Trade Strategy
Edmonton’s circumstances also line up almost perfectly with Dreger’s report.
Friedman says Edmonton has excess defensive depth and has explored turning a defenceman into a forward. Dreger says Edmonton is a frontrunner in discussions for an unnamed young Eastern Conference forward who could play center. Poitras is a young right-shot Boston Bruins center whose long-term position remains unsettled.
Individually, none of those facts confirms a trade.
Collectively, they create a compelling case.
There has also been outside speculation connecting Poitras to Edmonton, although the most important reporting remains the broader descriptions from Dreger and Friedman rather than a confirmation that Poitras himself is the player involved.
That is how I would treat this rumor until a major insider puts Poitras’ name directly into the conversation.
My Read on a Potential Edmonton Oilers–Boston Bruins Trade
Poitras would make a lot of sense for Edmonton, but I wouldn’t overpay.
The attraction here is buying a depreciated young asset before he potentially establishes himself somewhere else. If Boston’s asking price reaches premium-prospect or high-draft-pick territory, the Oilers should walk away.
Edmonton simply doesn’t have enough premium draft capital to continually spend major assets on uncertain players.
A lateral hockey trade is different.
If Bowman can turn a surplus depth defenceman into a 22-year-old right-shot center earning $850,000, that is precisely the type of roster optimization Edmonton should investigate.
And from Boston’s perspective, moving Poitras only makes sense if the returning player solves another organizational need.
That’s why I keep coming back to Friedman’s original wording: lateral trade.
This doesn’t feel like Edmonton searching for another blockbuster name.
It feels like Bowman searching for a player whose value could look dramatically different six months from now.
Poitras fits that description almost perfectly.
For now, though, there is one important update: no credible report as of Wednesday has confirmed that Matt Poitras is the unnamed player Dreger was discussing. The evidence makes him a logical candidate, not a confirmed Oilers trade target.
If that changes, this rumor could move very quickly.
